I expect he did. And, BTW, although I haven't been to the Amazon Rainforest, I have been to Rio and did hear 'OK' said numerous times. And, I was paying close attention to all the Brazilians not just the hot babes on Ipanema Beach. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I'm now reading Saving Mars, a freebie I picked up at Amazon -- probably based on a recommendation I saw here at MobileRead. I've read the first 6.5 chapters and I'm enjoying it very much.
![]() I just can't figure out how the covers are pertinent. 6 books in the series and everyone of them has a lovely woman in an elegant gown. So far (first 6.5 chapters, remember) they're living on Mars and wearing "walk-out suits" -- environmental suits with helmets. Quite a long way from an evening gown. |

Finished How to Overthrow the Government by Arianna Huffington, continuing with The Mother Tongue: English and How It Got That Way by Bill Bryson. Yes, MickeyC, Bryson's book is much more engaging, though I stumbled a little when he started talking about languages in the Soviet Union-- me thinking the book was newish since Amazon lists the publishing date as 2015-- but it turns out this book was written in 1990; only just now transcribed into digital form.

Which was excellent! Five stars. I really liked the stories in this issue.
Next up: Alternate Generals I edited by Harry TurtleDove. Starting off with an alternate Icini rebellion, it seems. I'm not always keen on alternate history, but this looks interesting. |

I just finished Harry Turtledove's new book "Bombs Away", the first book in his new series The Hot War - the escalation of the Korean War into a world war in 1951. It was an interesting read.

Having been away, I'm a little behind on updating my reading list. My recent books are:
Man-Kzin Wars IX. An anthology of stories by various authors, set in Larry Niven's "Known Space" universe. Originally bought from Baen in 2002, and all very enjoyable. Recommended. Police at the Funeral by Margery Allingham. The 4th book in the "Campion" series, and very enjoyable. Campion is asked for help by a family in Cambridge whose members are being systematically killed. An good story with some interesting characters and unexpected plot twists. Very good. Retief! by Keith Laumer. Originally bought from Baen in 2002, this is a collection of all of Laumer's "Retief" stories, about a diplomat in a future galactic federation who solves problems by unorthodox methods. Excellent. The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. A quick re-read of this in preparation for... The Time Ships by Stephen Baxter. An authorised sequel to "The Time Machine" and follows on directly from it. An excellent hard-SF time-travel extravaganza with enough twists and paradoxes to satisfy the most devoted lover of time-travel stories. Absolutely excellent, but do make sure that you read "The Time Machine" before it to set the scene. Last edited by HarryT; 07-28-2015 at 09:47 AM. |
