Windows 10 - free upgrade to those with PC using Windows 7 or 8

I am curious to install windows again but my htpc is running so well on ubuntu I am not sure I want to rock the boat last time windows 10 corrupted by boot drive that I was not able to run anything till i formated.

I have actually used PCs with all those versions.
(Plus MS-Dos 1-5, Xenix, Att Unix for PC, and DR-GEM. Dunno if running IBM mainframe code on an AT-370 counts as a PC OS.)

(OS/2 we tested but never made it to production. Too pricey. )

Looking forward to Win10 erasing some (all?) of Win8.1's MPD issues.

I've been stockpiling parts for a hardware upgrade of my old home server: that will be the first to get the upgrade. Clean install Win7, no critical apps, all recent hardware.

If that passes muster, I'll move on to the netbook and the desktop.

So in a nutshell do I upgrade my 4 year old Acer laptop running Windows 7? And hubbys 5 year old Samsung. Both laptops are fine on windows 7. I don't want to jinx anything especially as have iTunes 11 with 200GB on mine.

Smart process as discussed above is to get the updates but not upgrade right away.

Wait until the online screaming from the oddball configurations dies down.

Backup all data on the system you can most easily tolerate going down and do that one.

Use it until you're comfortable with the new OS.
(Maybe use it to test the critical apps from the other systems.)

Repeat until all have been upgraded.

No OS upgrade is truly risk free; all you can do is minimize it and hope for the best.
(Corporate IT types wait as much as a year, enthusiasts wait as little as a minute. Everybody else falls somewhere in between.)

Personally I'd wait at least a month or two to give application developers a chance to roll out new drivers, updates to incompatible applications, etc.

I think you got a little heavy handed there Harry. While the addition of the history of windows wasn't to the "T" on point it wasn't like somebody brought up and discussed how their grill master BBQ was running Linux either.

There is a line to be drawn but it doesn't have to be pencil thin.

I'm hankering after a windows surface tbh, and maybe the next Surface Pro, that way I can do everything on a windows tablet except itunes (due to its size). Thats probably what I'd do first, allowing myself to learn about windows 10 while my current laptop stays on windows 7. We have a year to decide and hopefully a new Surface Pro will be out by then.

I was very tempted by the new Surface as I really wanted the 10 not a 12, but I want a better processer really.

Windows 10 is using the same drivers as windows 8 and 8.1 and for the most part windows 7. Yes there have been updates to most of the drivers over the years. And as windows 7 upgrades this versions of windows it downloads and installs updated drivers. I have been doing beta, preview testing for windows for a very long time and I have to say this is the best beginning for a new version that I have ever seen. Only windows 7 comes close but not near so.

Sony have the following "helpful" information page about upgrading and basically want people to wait until November

"WARNING: There is a risk of software/driver corruption. We therefore strongly recommend that you do not upgrade to Windows 10 when it becomes available on July 29.

We have 3 Windows 7 computers in the family (one purchased within the last two weeks), and none of them had shown the Windows 10 upgrade tray thingie. They are all up to date with Windows Update. I ran some batch file on the newest computer, and Windows 10 upgrade offer is now showing up on it.

Doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling.

On the ones which are not showing the upgrade icon in the system tray, do you see the "Windows 10 Upgrade Available" banner when you run "Windows Update"?
