the first thing i want to say : before i posted in this thread i connect my pw2 to my pc serial port (connect rx and tx and gnd only!) !! and i didnt get anything but my pw2 is alive yet ![]() but i have some problems and questions related to your responding: 1.i searched this forum about 7-9 days and i understand somethings and sometimes i got confused. one of them is 1v8 and 3v3 and 5v. what is this voltage? is it for kindle or is it for power on the chip and adaptor? 2.For some reasons i cann't buy microFTX and ft230xq chip. i thinks i have two way: make a usb2serial adaptor or buy a FTDI adaptor or buy a PL2303 USB UART BOARD ? (in this time the easiest adaptor i can find is PL2303 - it works with 3.3 and 5 v) 3.can i buy or make any adaptor and then set its voltage with a 1v8 regulator? But if your not getting anything (reasonable) - how do you know the Kindle's serial port interface is still good? 1. It refers to the highest voltage used for the TX and RX signals. It is just the common way to identify what the signal voltages are. View (and keep) the attachments to the post here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...0&postcount=14 2. Strange. What country are you located in? (And what is your native language, maybe we have someone here that can answer your questions in your native language.) Try: https://www.tindie.com/stores/jimpar...n=badge_medium or: https://store.jim.sh/ Note: There have been posts here of people using both 3v3 and 5v0 (read 'v' as if it was '.') but I do not post recommendations that go against the manufacturers specifications. 3. Read my entire reply. At the last I mention that the Wiki index section I told you to use included a link to a DIY level shifter. Last edited by knc1; 07-02-2015 at 07:25 AM. |

By the way, is there another project providing a good PDF reader, which is easy to install ? This is mostly what I need.

KOreader.
("another project" is almost meaningless without context and posted in a jail break "HowTo" thread) |

Will these methods work on 5.6.2.1?
Or, should I be the first to volunteer? ![]() |

My apologies for not asking earlier (in a single post)!
Can this be done with the Kindle powered on? I'm not sure how to power it off without removing the battery... |

Just unplug the battery, that will power it down (the only way to power off the electronics). |

Hello! I will get my KV soon, so now I collect information on how to get jailbreak. I have read that I have to use serial port for this. This will be my first experience in jailbreak Kindle and in Linux, so I apologize for the questions that may seem silly to you:
1. Getting jailbreak on KV is analogously to getting jailbreak on KPW2, right? 2. Can I use this adapter (http://www.aliexpress.com/item/1PCS-...127054200.html) with this level shifter (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=162775) ? 3. The battery does not need to be taken out during manipulations, right? 4. Can I disconnect the wire after getting root? Excuse my bad English is not my native language. Thank you. |

Indeed, the same files are used. 2) If the documentation on that page is correct, you don't need a level shifter, just provide a 1v8 reference on the "vio" pin. Where it says: "either 3v3 or 5v0" that is when using the internal reference. Further down the page, it mentions 1v8 using an external reference. 3) I recommend that you unplug it while making the electrical connections. 4) Yes. You only need the serial port long enough to run the shell script from the jail break package. Notes: *) The subject of where to obtain the 1v8 reference voltage - **) I think that is posted here, somewhere, for the Voyage (Note, it may not have a KV prefix tag, it was very early that the jailbreak of the KV was described) **) You can use an external battery, any battery with Li/Fe chemistry provides 1v8 terminal voltage open circuit. I have a post here, somewhere, with pictures, of an example. *) The connection points are very tiny. If not skilled with soldering (solder paste and hot air recommended, soldering iron is possible) - then you will find posts here where people just tape the wires into place. *) The pad layout of the serial port has not changed since the K4. Only its location on the motherboard changes. You can find a lot of pictures and information attached to the posts of my "KT2 Exposed" thread. |

Almost always, it is provided from the USB power on the USB cable. In general, it depends on the device. If you meant the **I/O reference voltage (1v8)** to the board: You can take the external 1.8 volt reference from a Li/Fe chemistry battery. Better, take it from the adapter card. It is difficult to give specific details without knowing what adapter you have in front of you. Please post a link to the adapter you have, even a link to a sales site. Names, numbers, pictures, anything at all to help identify the adapter you have. |
