I thought the post was good enough to post twice, in case someone didn't see the first one. hahaha
In all seriousness, I apologize for that. Evidently I've started doing something, that I hadn't been doing before, that causes a duplicate post to be generated, because I've done that twice in the last couple of days (I caught it the first time). For now, at least, I'm going to check, after making what I think is one post, to make sure that there aren't two posts. |

79% Markdown on this Fascinating Memoir by Singer Shania Twain. $2.99.
79% from the digital list price.
From This Moment On. By Shania Twain. Rated 4.4 stars, from 196 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $16.00; digital list price $13.99; Kindle price $2.99. Altria Books, publisher. 450 pages. http://www.amazon.com/This-Moment-Sh...This+Moment+On. Book Description . . . . from superstar Shania Twain, a poignant, heartfelt, and beautifully told account of her hard-scrabble childhood, rise to worldwide fame, and recent personal tragedies. The world may know Shania Twain as many things: a music legend, a mother, and recently, a fixture in the news for her painful, public divorce and subsequent marriage to a cherished friend. But in this extraordinary autobiography, Shania reveals that she is so much more. She is Eilleen Twain, one of five children born into poverty in rural Canada, where her family often didn’t have enough food to send her to school with lunch. She’s the teenage girl who helped her mother and young siblings escape to a battered woman’s shelter to put an end to the domestic violence in her family home. And she’s the courageous twenty-two-year-old who sacrificed to keep her younger siblings together after her parents were tragically killed in a car accident. Shania Twain’s life has evolved from a series of pivotal moments, and in unflinching, heartbreaking prose, Shania spares no details as she takes us through the events that have made her who she is. She recounts her difficult childhood, her parents’ sudden death and its painful aftermath, her dramatic rise to stardom, her devastating betrayal by a trusted friend, and her joyful marriage to the love of her life. From these moments, she offers profound, moving insights into families, personal tragedies, making sense of one’s life, and the process of healing. Shania Twain is a singular, remarkable woman who has faced enormous odds and downfalls, and her extraordinary story will provide wisdom, inspiration, and hope for almost anyone. Roger Courtney: By Strength and Guile - The Story Of The Founder Of The SBS by Nigel Cawthorne Described as the "Shadowy sister of the SAS", The Special Boat Service (SBS) is one of the most well-trained and elite special forces units in the world. They have performed countless harrowing missions, dozens of hostage rescues and daring night time raids stretching back to the Second World War. The SBS originally formed as the Special Boat Section in 1940, when Roger Courtney, an army officer, risked a court-martial to demonstrate to his superiors how valuable a naval special forces unit could be. A big-game hunter, gold prospector and canoeist, distinguished during the "monster fever", Courtney was one of the most exotic figures of the Second World War. Nigel Cawthorne is the author of over 160 books including `David Cameron: Class Act', `Blond Ambition: The Rise and Rise of Boris Johnson', `Jeremy Clarkson: Motormouth', `Harry: A Prince Among Men' and `A Little Bit of Stephen Fry'. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XXOZ2US/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00XXOZ2US/ http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00XXOZ2US/ |

The Seige of Petersburg was a series of battles that lasted a little over nine months, in 1864-65. One thing that stands out to me about the Seige of Petersburg is the fact that more soldiers lost their lives in it--some 70,000--than any single battle of the Civil War--Antietam, Shiloh, (Second) Bull Run, Gettysburg, you name it. Yet, those battles are much more famous than the Seige of Petersburg. |

250 Never Before Published Photographs of The Great War, in this $3.99 Bargain!
Marked down $16.00 from the digital list price of $19.99, making a nice 80% drop (if figured from the print list price, it would be an even greater percentage).
In the "old days" (ha), I suppose that this would be considered a coffee table book, what with it being jam-packed with photographs. I think that it still could be a coffee table book if you turn on your tablet with this ebook loaded, and leave it on the table before company comes. ha. Ratings are a little hard to come by on this book, but the ones that there are are high ones. And from skimming through the text, I think that I can say that it is a good one. The 250 "new" photographs of World War I easily make it a must-post. A Doctor in The Great War: Unseen Photographs of Life in the Trenches. By Andrew Davidson. Rated 5 stars, but from only 1 review at Amazon at the present moment; rated 4.00 at GoodReads, but from only 3 reviews. Print list price $37.00; digital list(?) price $19.99; Kindle price now $3.99. Altria Books/Marble Arch Press, publisher(s). 320 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Great-W...1JGY03MXTC2C5K. Book Description Featuring 250 previously unknown photographs, this is the extraordinary true story of a young doctor whose photos left behind an astonishing firsthand account of life at the front of World War I. As a twenty-five-year-old medical officer and one of the first doctors to win the Military Cross, Fred Davidson took countless photographs while he served in the trenches from 1914-1915. Though he took them illegally, more than 250 of the photographs shot by Davidson and his fellow officers survived and are now shared for the first time in this harrowing, eye-catching, and poignant narrative of the Great War. In A Doctor in the Great War, author Andrew Davidson—the grandson of Fred—depicts the everyday lives of soldiers, both on and off duty: from the parade ground at Glasgow’s Maryhill to the brothels of Armentieres, from the band of brothers who dubbed themselves “Old Contemptibles” to the original folding Kodak and Ansco cameras they used. It is the story of the 1st Cameronians, who achieved notoriety for selling the Great War’s earliest front line photographs. And it is a deeply personal account of the pictures that have been passed down for three generations, describing the men who fought with Fred Davidson, the conditions they served in, the battles they saw, and the horrors they endured. A must-have for history and photography enthusiasts alike, this glimpse of the War to End All Wars is an unusually intimate portrait that will engulf you in the lives of soldiers and leave you humbled and amazed. The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914
by Christopher Clark is today's Kindle Daily Deal. It can be downloaded for $1.99 http://www.amazon.com/Sleepwalkers-H...7903885&sr=1-1 Below is the blurb: One of The New York Times Book Review’s 10 Best Books of the Year Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize (History) The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914 is historian Christopher Clark’s riveting account of the explosive beginnings of World War I. Drawing on new scholarship, Clark offers a fresh look at World War I, focusing not on the battles and atrocities of the war itself, but on the complex events and relationships that led a group of well-meaning leaders into brutal conflict. Clark traces the paths to war in a minute-by-minute, action-packed narrative that cuts between the key decision centers in Vienna, Berlin, St. Petersburg, Paris, London, and Belgrade, and examines the decades of history that informed the events of 1914 and details the mutual misunderstandings and unintended signals that drove the crisis forward in a few short weeks. Meticulously researched and masterfully written, Christopher Clark’s The Sleepwalkers is a dramatic and authoritative chronicle of Europe’s descent into a war that tore the world apart. |

73% Off of this Recountal by the Author of His Exploration Alone in the Amazon Basin.
Sounds like a book to keep you on the edge of your seat. If you're interested in a similar one, I recommend Theodore Roosevelt's book Through the Brazilian Wilderness. He recounts the expedition that he was on, after his Presidency, to explore a tributary of the Amazon (later named Rio Roosevelt in his honor). He barely made it out alive. Being published pre-1923, that book is in the public domain in the U.S. and can be gotten free from the Internet Archive and probably other places.
Mother of God: An Extraordinary Journey into the Uncharted Tributaries of the Western Amazon. By Paul Rosolie. Rated 4.6 stars, from 113 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $15.99; digital list(?) price $10.99; Kindle price now $2.99. Harper, publisher. 340 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Mother-God-Ext...N%3DB00DB39Y6E. Book Description For fans of The Lost City of Z, Walking the Amazon, and Turn Right at Machu Picchu comes naturalist and explorer Paul Rosolie’s extraordinary adventure in the uncharted tributaries of the Western Amazon—a tale of discovery that vividly captures the awe, beauty, and isolation of this endangered land and presents an impassioned call to save it. In the Madre de Dios—Mother of God—region of Peru, where the Amazon River begins its massive flow, the Andean Mountain cloud forests fall into lowland Amazon Rainforest, creating the most biodiversity-rich place on the planet. In January 2006, when he was just a restless eighteen-year-old hungry for adventure, Paul Rosolie embarked on a journey to the west Amazon that would transform his life. Venturing alone into some of the most inaccessible reaches of the jungle, he encountered giant snakes, floating forests, isolated tribes untouched by outsiders, prowling jaguars, orphaned baby anteaters, poachers in the black market trade in endangered species, and much more. Yet today, the primordial forests of the Madre de Dios are in danger from developers, oil giants, and gold miners eager to exploit its natural resources. In Mother of God, this explorer and conservationist relives his amazing odyssey exploring the heart of this wildest place on earth. When he began delving deeper in his search for the secret Eden, spending extended periods in isolated solitude, he found things he never imagined could exist. “Alone and miniscule against a titanic landscape I have seen the depths of the Amazon, the guts of the jungle where no men go, Rosolie writes. “But as the legendary explorer Percy Fawcett warned, ‘the few remaining unknown places of the world exact a price for their secrets.’” Illustrated with 16 pages of color photos. |
