Just a heads-up in case one happens to like the Leawo Blu-Ray Player and were thinking of possibly getting the accompanying Leawo Blu-Ray Ripper (not free) as a means of backing up one's collection.

Last I heard, the ripper was itself ripped off from other currently-free-while-in-beta "tools"-like software which I'm not sure whether or not I can direct link or namedrop due to forum rules. But a Google search for the phrase "Scam alert - leawo blu-ray ripper" should probably bring it up.

To be fair, it's possible that things have changed over the past few years and they now make use of their own stuff for the ripper which they charge for. And quite probably the actual free player doesn't have such problematic origins.

ETA: They do now seem to have just a DVD Ripper (and no Blu-Ray version anymore) and a Media Converter Suite which takes care of the Blu-Ray stuff, so seems likely they've realized the error (or at least unsustainability of depending on 3rd-party external software) of their ways in the intervening years. But I will note that you can get equivalent or better "tools" openly offered for free for collection backup purposes if you're willing to take the time to learn how stuff works.

ETA 2: It seems the Leawo Blu-Ray Ripper is no longer sold via their .com site, but can still be found via the .org version. Here's an old sponsored ad-post from 2013 describing what else it was supposed to be able to do, much of which can be handled by free (and sometimes open-source) software.

I will note that the since the last time I tried it, the actual free Leawo Blu-Ray Player has added the nicety of being able to see and select from Blu-Ray disc menus, as well as setting the disc region, so it's probably worth getting if you don't want to mess around with making VLC Player talk to other software just to watch your BRDs and doing mystery meat navigation from the menubars to try and find the bit you wanted to see.

I just made a short Whispersync deal post on the "Cookbooks" thread. Reason for posting it there: a Mobilereader made a post there of the (marked down) ebook.

Might be a different narration, but there is a cheaper option. A $.99 Kindle version with $2.99 whispersync add-on.

Amazon/Audible make it very difficult to see which audio version matches up with which ebook version. There's a free Kindle version that pairs with a $2.99 Flo Gibson audio, but people might well prefer the Timothy West or Simon Vance version (I would). Not only do they not disclose the matching Whispersync narrator, sometimes one ebook version will pair with more than one narration. It's a puzzlement.

But since I think most would want to get through the first five Barsetshire novels first, it's a decision that can be postponed.

Yeah, I'm sure that there's a different narrator. The one that I posted is the Penguin Classics edition, which is different from the other editions, too, because of who the editor is and what he or she may have contributed to the book. Sometimes the editor has written an introduction that is especially noteworthy. Occasionally, when the book is cheap, I will buy a classic that I already have, e.g., The Iliad, because the book has a very good introduction that I don't have in my other copies.

I share your frustration, issybird, with the difficulty in finding out which audio is matched with which edition. I've even thought about buying the ebook, and then returning it, just to be able to find out. For this Trollope book, I clicked on the link that said something like "Audible edition" under something like "other formats," on the Amazon webpage. That link took me to the Audible webpage that I referenced. In retrospect, I wonder if that is reliable. For Amazon's own good, I think that they should make it clear--if I can't find out exactly which narration that I'm getting, I might not buy the Whispersync narration, just hoping that I will like it, and I might not even buy the ebook to begin with.

I just thought of a way to find out which audio goes with an ebook. It's a hassle, but I think that it is surefire. I can listen to the audio sample on Amazon's webpage, and then listen to the samples on the Audible webpage which lists all of the editions, until I find one that matches the one that I heard on the webpage at Amazon. Like you said, "Amazon/Audible make it very difficult."

The frustrating part is that they USED TO give you this info. Now, it is sometimes easier to start with the Audible page - but that depends on the type of membership you have, as they often don't display whispersync info for non-credit members now (I have two accounts, one with and one without and with a third browser not logged in, I often get different info on all three for the same audiobook).

Sometimes the Amazon page for the audiobook lists the Kindle edition that works with it (and sometimes not, which I've also run into). The Kindle book now pretty much never tells you, only that some random audio edition is synced to that particular ebook edition.
