I recall buying this trilogy for 99 cents US (price has since gone up), and I'm on the third volume and I'm enjoying this very much. It's pretty well written for a new author (new to me, at least) from Amazon's equivalent of the bargain bin.

It's clear Stone is at the beginning of his writing career, but I suspect he will only get better and stronger as he progresses. I've enjoyed the books very much and while the main character is pretty well developed, I felt the supporting characters were a little two dimensional though they weren't obnoxiously so.

One of the great perks of eReading is the sheer number of new authors willing to let you read their stuff for cheap or for free. This is one to look at if you like dystopian stories or you like new writers.

Worth a look.

It should be free all of the time. It's public domain in the U.S. If it's not free at Amazon, it is at Project Gutenberg. There's a free audiobook at librivox as well.

If you are into the lensman books, First Lensman has a free audiobook at librivox as well. First Lensman hasn't made it into Project Gutenberg yet, but it's on the way.

The question is whether this is the original magazine version (PD), or the revised Fantasy Press edition - which I would imagine is still in copyright?

I used to have a complete set of Fantasy Press editions in this series, but got rid of them in order to buy a Kaypro II.

I haven't read any Smith since that time 1982 or 1984, so I have no idea if I would even enjoy reading these again.

The one Gutenberg has is both, so be sure to check which one you are downloading. The Lensman version is from a Pyramid reprint.

The look inside says it's the book version instead of the magazine version. I just downloaded the one from the Amazon link and it has the Arisa stuff from the book publication, so it's the Lensman prequel version.

From an international perspective, Open Road Media's versions of the US public domain titles which they offer (and sometimes offer free) don't even exist in their available catalogue outside the US stores (not even the Dorothy Sayers pre-1923 PD titles which are all fully PD in Canada due to Life+50 rules).

I loved my Kaypro II...

I started re-reading one of E E Doc Smith's series (I think it was Skylark, definitely not Lensman), and stopped because I was annoyed that the go to solution for everything was genocide.

OK. Can someone give me the basics of buying Amazon E-books for kids? My daughter has an iPad and a Kindle Fire. The latter is tied to my A account and has FreeTime. The former might have music via my wife's A account.

As much as I love Amazon and their ebook ecosystem in general, their kid related features have never grabbed me. I looked into them briefly, and after about 60 seconds decided it wasn't worth my time or effort.

So for my kids I do either of two things:

1. My kids Kindles (pw and fires) are tied to a single Amazon account I set up just for them.
If there is stuff they want, they show me, I enter the purchase password, and it's available on all their devices.

2. Most of what I get is freed from DRM and stored in my Calibre library, so if I want to give them something, I just side load it through any of the various methods available.

Yes, I too really loved my Kapro II, and was so glad that I decided on that rather than the Osbourne I.

I read my first 'Doc' Smith novel when it was serialized in IF Worlds of Science Fiction, back in 1964 or '65. The title was "Skylark DuQuesne. I remember being completely enthralled. That's when I fell in love with the sweep of his writing.

My favorite series, however, was the Lensman Series. I still have great memories of those books.

Can someone post something here on how they read as an adult? Are they still enjoyable?

I read Galactic Patrol earlier this year, for the first time, and found it a bit too breathlessly pulpy to be enjoyable.

I never could get into his stuff, even when I was an adolescent. I was more into the Heinlein juveniles as a kid. Still am, really. With Heinlein, there was no firm dividing line between adult fiction and juvenile fiction.
