Concerning Gutenberg . . . . do the Gutenberg ebooks have attractive covers? I think that that was the issue for Dr. Drib. I don't use Gutenberg much, but I don't remember a book there having much of a cover--maybe just the typed name of the book, the author, and maybe some other little stuff.

I vote number two.

Do Gutenberg books even have covers? I don't recall seeing a single one.

... then again, not really interested in the covers, just want to read.

Some do. If the book was created in the last few years and cover art was available from the original book scanned, it should have a cover.

But I don't think it would keep me from reading a book that sounds interesting or has a 'pre sold' reputation.

If a book is for sale, it NEEDS an attractive WELL DESIGNED cover. It is an indication of how seriously the author/publisher takes his/her work. An indication of overall seriousness of intent to me.

Sorry, I may not have been clear . . . . I wasn't saying that I thought that it was good that some books do not have covers, I was just saying it is better to be informed than to be ignorant about the matter.

In the computing world publishers who sold floppies and CDs full of public domain software were known as Shovelware Publishers, so in that light I submit the following:
Shovelbook Publishers
Shovelprint Publishers
Shovelworks Publishers

with my preference being Shovelworks Publishers.

I'll add those to the list. So far we have the following suggestions to describe Krypos and similar publishers. All of these are wonderful suggestions, you are to be commended.
1. Premium Public Domain Publishers.

Being so very humble and modest as I am, I forgot to include my suggestion earlier:
5. Cleaned-up-public-domain-books republishers.

Please, if you make a suggestion, give lots of thought to it, as the one chosen will be the official Mobileread way of designating these publishers for all eternity. (ha)

Project Gutenberg books are (generally) created by volunteers scanning, converting, and proofreading public domain books. Early PG books were text only, and had their illustrations stripped because of the technology constraints of the time. Many of the sources are with blank covers, rebound library copies or missing the original dust jacket. I also think a lot of non-fiction didn't get an illustrated cover a century ago. PG doesn't sell their ebooks, they're all free to download. If cover art is that important to you, you can always download the freebie from PG and see if Calibre can find a cover for you.
