Avenging Angels by Glen Davies

Even before the outbreak of war, 1914 has not been a good year for Sylvia Shaw.
Her comfortable family life has gone: prosperity lost in the court case that drained the life from her father and saw the end of her engagement to Hugh Osborne.
And now her brothers are off to war.
The cause for which she had worked as a Suffragist is gone too.
The campaign for Votes for Women has been laid aside for the duration of the war, but not before it exacted a terrible toll on her.
Now she must struggle to find work and rebuild some kind of life.
If it's work that helps the war effort, then so much the better.
But first she needs a decent place to live, and there are pitfalls for a vulnerable single woman in London, particularly in the Bohemian world of artist Octavius Jameson.
Max Bryson, the lawyer who represented her family in the court case before the war, has mixed feelings at first about working with Lloyd George for the war effort, but soon decides that this is the right man to shake up Asquith's government, perhaps even the right man to lead the country in its hour of need.
Max has also known tragedy, and is still striving to solve tangled family relationships of his own, but he has never forgotten Sylvia.
How can a woman disappear so suddenly and so completely?

Plato: Letters to my Son (2013) by Neel Burton

A novel inspired by an obscure and apocryphal fragment in Diogenes Laertius purporting to be Plato's will, in which the great philosopher bequeaths his possessions to his son Adimantes. Burton runs with this idea, 'channelling' Plato dictating letters to this mysterious son from his deathbed. Plato never married, and moreover was likely a homosexual who overtly eschewed family life. Therefore, this intriguing literary device leaves the reader guessing as to the boy's true relationship to the much older man

Kypros Press, one of the cleaned-up-public-domain-books republishers (does anyone know of a better description for these publishers? If so, I'd like to know.), has a new slate of books marked down to $0.00. There are 82, if I counted correctly.

I'm posting this on the "General Fiction" thread because it looks like the great majority of the freebies this time are works of fiction of some kind.

You can go to this webpage to start your perusal. The search was made for price, low to high. If you only want freebies, be sure to check the price, after the 5th webpage, to make sure that book is, in fact, free.

UPDATE: Some of the books turning up in the search appear not to be Kypros imprints.

I have to say that Kypros Press has some of the most abysmal covers imaginable.

Here's one cover from this 1876 novel, shown below, replete with cars and electricity.

Call me strange ["Hey, strange!"] but that cover destroys the mood for me.

I'm certainly not going to be offended by you passing on the publisher's ebooks. Even if I was interested in the title, I'd probably pass on that Trollope novel, myself, because of the tacky, unsuitable cover. What in the world was the publisher thinking?

I'm sure that you can go to the Internet archive and get a copy of the book with a scan of the original cover. But, the text would be crummy on that one. Or, you might want to wait and see if any of the other Premium Public Domain Publishers (thanks, murg), which seem to be proliferating now, publish it and drops the price to free.

I have yet to see any where the text doesn't come from Gutenberg with no corrections. The /premium/ is to add a clickable TOC.

Okay, we have another suggestion for a description of Krypos and similar publishers: "weird name publishers." ha. Shall we have a contest to determine what we officially call these publishers, on Mobileread? If so, here are the first two suggestions:
1. Premium Public Domain Publishers.
2. Weird Name Publishers.
Would other Mobilereaders like to weigh in?

Concerning Gutenberg . . . . do the Gutenberg ebooks have attractive covers? I think that that was the issue for Dr. Drib. I don't use Gutenberg much, but I don't remember a book there having much of a cover--maybe just the typed name of the book, the author, and maybe some other little stuff.

I actually own the Delphi Edition, which I purchased because I really love Trollope's writings.

Along with Dickens, I would like to own all of Trollope's works in the uniform hardcover Folio Edition.
