Equally ironically, it was the last straw on the camel's back in our "pay X upfront, remainder on delivery" payment terms, back then. There was just a big thread on #eprdctn, on Twitter, obviously, on this same topic: lots of bookmakers STILL not requiring payment upfront, trying to figure out how to NOT get ripped off by clients. After everything I've been through, I told them that I never found anything (watermarking, yadda--yadda) that works. Just...pay upfront. I dislike it, and more importantly, I'm sure it costs us perfectly honest clients who are afraid of themselves being ripped off, but...I really had no choice.

I have a suggestion. Run every other paragraph through a Borkifier engine as a preview copy. That will let them see the approximate formatting and verify that you did the work of formatting their book, but the result will be completely unshippable to customers and won't be machine-translateable back to the original (assuming you make your Borkifier slightly lossy). Release an un-Borkified copy upon payment.

For example, here's a quick hack:

Y'know, not to rain on your parade, but it's easier to take the source (assuming that there IS some, outside of a PDF, of course), and just "export to" or "save as" HTML and open the damned thing in a responsive browser, like "Web Developer" for Chrome, say, and show them what an abortion the damned thing looks like. That's the only thing I've found that works.

ALTHOUGH, if I had some extra time, Borking it would be fun. :-)

The nice thing about borking is that they can actually try out the preview on devices to verify that the content is, in fact, formatted correctly (except that the text is absurd), but can't possibly use it without paying for the real copy.

If you could only get rid of the Bork! Bork! Bork! at the end, I think this could start a new fad. It's infinitely more amusing than Pig Latin. Priced right, it should appeal especially to college students, and especially if it were erotica!

Yes, actually...that would, strewth be told, be groovy. +1! (and for those of us who can mostly collect, y'know, it would be pretty cool instead of lorem ipsum for sample layout purporses. But I'm serious--that WOULD be something that an eBookmaker could indeed use for preview pre-payment. Of course, you'd have to be able to DE-bork it.)

That is why I said a Sigil plugin. If you make it an output plugin, you end up creating a 'borked'-copy. The original retains.
