I could exchange it for another one; perhaps this unit was a fluke. I didn't mind the sponsored screen savers (have it on the other Kindles). Found them visually appealing at times. Just nice to have a book on the sleep screen instead of the stock screen savers. I'm more pleased to not have that ad strip at the bottom of the home screen. I do get recommendations on the home screen which can be turned off in Settings. I find those really useful and have spotted a few gems over the years there. So, I won't return to Best Buy and make a stink about it. Just really amazed at this.

Yes, the reading recommendations have nothing to do with having an SO Kindle; they're available on all Kindles.

Just read an Amazon review where someone said they preordered one and was unable to unsubscribe from Special Offers (no option to unsubscribe). Customer service said there was an issue with the preordered batches not having this option. Perhaps Amazon made some sort of adjustment as a temporary fix. If they eventually appear we know something was up.

I was unaware that any Kindle could show the book cover on the sleep screen without a third-party hack. It shows random generic images (newsprint, typewriter keys, alphabet blocks, etc.) instead.

They are ads for books that change on a regular basis. That's why it's called Sponsored
Screensavers. Yes, I preferred these over the stock images.

I misread your post, thought you were saying you liked not having SO on your screensaver.

I haven't had SO in a long time, I remember them advertising products totally unrelated to ebooks.

Sorry for not responding earlier. I've been sick. There were no books pre-installed, so, yes, I tested with books from my account which indicated in the book description that enhanced typesetting was available.

I don't know which generation my Paperwhite is but I love it. It was my first eReader and I did a lot of research before buying it. I can now read in bed without having a lamp on to disturb my wife. I can read outside in bright sunlight--something I certainly cannot do on my Kindle Fire and I love the ability to make notes if something I want to know more about catches my attention.

I have a good friend who has a nook and he envies my paperwhite.

If the large logo on the back of the device says "Kindle" it's a PW1. If it says "Amazon", it's a PW2.

Because one poster's track record indicates a bias against Amazon, and general criticism of Amazon (no matter what they do), and a habit of assuming the worst.

Rest assured, we have pointed out in several places, numerous times, that it isn't worth speculating on why the enhanced typesetting is not available for sideloaded books... when it isn't available for Amazon-loaded book either. Yet.

It was my first eReader and I did a lot of research before buying it. I can now read in bed without having a lamp on to disturb my wife.
