New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:
Humble Gamer Comics Bundle presented by Dark Horse, and chock-full of comics based upon video games (+2 artbooks), including one co-written by Rhianna Pratchett, daughter of Terry and apparently a noted game storywriter in her own right. It's another one of those $-more-than-average for the top-tier (+$5 this time around), with additional titles added next week. There's also a couple of direct-download freebies of Dark Horse's FCBD and other promo titles. Right now, the price is fluctuating all over the place (~$8 is what I'm seeing right now for the average), so the best strategy is to keep a few tabs open to the page and occasionally reload the most expensive one to see if it drops and if it doesn't, buy it from the cheapest (HB does this thing where it considers whatever price was the "average" at the time you loaded the page to be what you have to beat to get the bonuses, even if it goes up or down later). Anyway, titles as follows: Quote:

A little help?
I splurged (only a little bit, because of the sorry state of my wallet) on the recent Eisner sale. I didn't even get the comics I wanted the most (the Sandman), but I purchased several series and I thought: OK, this is it for me this summer. No more comics for a while. A couple days later, I have 4 or 5 titles in my cart. ![]() This current DC sale looks like an awesome way to get to know the DC universe a little bit... But all the collections are described by saying something like "the event that rocked the foundations of the DC universe" or that "changed the DC universe forever". That's not very helpful for newcomers, folks. Out of this selection the only one I've read is Forever Evil (I purchased it in a recent sale; I enjoyed it). I like Grant Morrison, so I am interested in Batman RIP and Final Crisis. I am also thinking in picking up that fat, juicy collection of Superman: Doomed (500 pages for such a low price!). And Batman: Knightfall was very well received, wasn't it? But do I need the three volumes to get a complete story? I have never read a Green Lantern, Aquaman, or Flash comic, so I feel I need to educate myself and pick up at least one from these guys. My obsessed-with-superheroes 6 year-old son needs a father who knows his stuff. Maybe The Sinestro Corps War (that guys shows up in Forever Evil, so at least I know who he is). That 52 thingy looks interesting, too. But I don't know what it is. Anyway, any suggestions? And sorry for my rambling. |

That said, for a casual fan I'd recommend Death of Superman. A lot of the 'big earth shattering crisis event books' are great, but you may need a bit of history with the characters to really appreciate them. Some of these books probably aren't appropriate for a 6 year old either, like Identity Crisis. I'm looking forward to reading Doomed. I've read very little of the last few years of DC, the new 52, but what I've read I've mostly really enjoyed. |

I will give you an anti-recommendation for Identity Crisis, which I read from the library a long time ago and remains overhyped trash that tried too hard to be ~shocking~ and ~edgy~ while at the same time pretending to have a pretentiously ~deep~ and ~meaningful~ point about the ethics of [SPOILER REDACTED] which nobody in the DCU really cares about anyway unless it suits the author's agenda. Also (and more importantly, TBH) for a variety of reasons, the whodunnit of the murder mystery just doesn't make sense. Also, I personally wouldn't spend money on Zero Hour. It's probably not all that bad a piece of storytelling, but it was a very long-ago event meant to reboot and reset the new DC Universe for once and for all, and obviously they've since done the retconning equivalent of quietly going into the next room and never mentioning it again. So your time is kind of wasted on that unless you're a morbidly curious history-of-the-DCU completionist. Hope this helps. Last edited by ATDrake; 07-07-2015 at 08:37 PM. Reason: Because someone might actually want to read it, even though at the time SPOILER was this gigantic overhyped selling point. |

Hey, thank you for the great (and fast!) responses. Great info (the anti-recommendations are particularly useful!
![]() By the way, I noticed the first issue of 52 is free (new freebie?). I am going to read it and see how I like it. |
