One of the reasons the level of discourse has sunk low is the tendency of certain members to cry "conspiration theory" (sic) at the drop of a hat at legitimate posts whose contents do not conform to their pre-conceived notions. That is the sort of behaviour that qualifies as toxic rather than passionate.

The more serious issues reported with Kobo are due to people hacking the device, something that Amazon has dealt with by locking down the Kindle. I suspect if one simply buys well-formatted kepubs from Kobo, it will be stable. Re: the Kindle, the Amazon Kindle board is thick with user issues: https://www.amazon.co.uk/forum/kindl...&cdSort=newest So I'm not sure. TBH I think both devices are pretty stable. |

Based on reading the general discussions throughout MobileRead.
Kobo fixes bugs and adds new ones. Kobos have more reports of freezing than Kindles. I laugh every time I hear the advice to "logout and back in so the database can regenerate itself" -- to my knowledge that has never been necessary for a Kindle. Restore to Factory Defaults is occasionally suggested, for exotic problems; whereas a Kobo can corrupt its database sitting on the table, you have to really work at it to bork the Kindle's database. I wouldn't go so far as to say that "nobody should buy a Kobo because it is horribly buggy" -- I don't know how buggy it is and how much that impacts the average user, but it certainly seems to be higher than normal. Nearly everyone who has had weird freezing or bugginess on a Kindle has done something seriously inadvisable with a hack. Kobo users who don't mess around at all will still develop problems. One stupid thing the Kindle does -- when a battery is aging, a situation can develop whereby a firmware update tries to flash itself and dies in the middle, ruining the flash chip and irreparably bricking the Kindle. But it is pretty rare. |

It's just that these days I'm terrified to voice any kind of opinion without being flamed or abused or being asked some passive aggressive question when I say things like:
I like Kobo's more than Kindles because there are more fonts on the Kobo (hides in the corner) |

Good for you, clearly fonts are important for you and it's wonderful that you found a device that you like and which offers the features you need.
![]() But quite frankly this is all getting a bit ridiculous. Whatever happened to discussing peoples' first impressions of their PW3? Which, nominally speaking ![]() Been a while since we had any of that... Instead we are having flame wars about whether or not we are having flame wars, or giving critical analysis to Kobo stability. I do agree with you here. I use Helvicta. I don't plan on getting a PW3 but I am waiting for the new font Bookerly on my Voyage. I don't think much of it on my Kindle Fire.

Kobo v Kindle?!? Really. Does that competitive muscle flexing ever end?
I used Kindles for years and feel that the PW and the Voy are great readers. A year ago I tried a Voy and a Kobo H2O for a week and I switched to the Kobo. I prefer the shading of the screen (kindle and Kobo are both sharp), the slightly larger screen, the incredibly large storage capacity (microsd), the font options and the general use and feel. My son inherited my PW2. It works for me because of Calibre since the smooth Amazon shop and buy experience is superior. If I had to switch back to a Kindle I'd be perfectly happy although I would miss some of the features. So both are truly outstanding readers that make reading a book a pleasant experience. Its just a matter of picking which set of features you prefer. |

My PW3 arrived today, so I can give a first hand first impression, and that impression is poor.
The resolution is incredibly good. I don't understand all these videos about people reviewing PW3 and saying they don't notice a big difference. I see the difference right away as plain as day. Unfortunately, the higher resolution and very sharply rendered fonts makes the device harder to read. Caecilia is ok (although, ugly, and makes it difficult to distinguish bolded text.) Bookerly sideloaded on the Kobo with a .1 or .2 adjustment to font weight is *much* more readable than on the PW3, by comparion, (assuming you don't want to use something more booklike such as Georgian or Charis SIL) Considering all the work the Community has done to create modified fonts that look good on E-ink, Amazon has no excuse here.. If they won't either allow adjustment of font weight, or allow sideloaded fonts, the readers just can't compete as a premium screen device for reading. (They do make up for it with stable 'just works' software, and very pleasant responsiveness.) |
