Laughing hysterically at the Rab C Nesbitt christmas special we recorded earlier today, and getting my better half to explain the jokes I miss (yes, I know -- I'm the Scot and she's not.... but she's better educated!)

Oh .... jeeps!!

OK .... the "bookshelf project." I am building three 6 foot tall freestanding bookshelves for my office. They were (are) intended to sit on a credenza at the back of the office.

I measured very carefully, so that the bookshelves would fit quite nicely, and then the plan was to put some additional trim on them so they would look like a single 9 foot by 6 foot bookshelf.

However, at the last minute, I decided to put some different trim on each of the three. Unfortunately each trim piece added 1/4 inch to each side of each set of shelves ... and in the end, they hung over the credenza by a full inch and a half.

Rather than pull them completely apart, I decided to make a new top for the credenza. The new top was supposed to be 76 inches long .... but a neighbor came over to talk to me while I was cutting the piece, and it ended up being off by 10 inches (never try to do math when someone is trying to bend your ear).

Today, I rebuilt the credenza top. I am going to put legs on the one that was too short, and turn it into a long table to put at the base of my bed in the master bedroom. I also got it primed, and most of the shelves primed and partially painted.

The problem is that I have a video conference with an important client the day after Christmas, and right now the office looks like a bomb went off in here because I took everything down from the wall over the credenza, and cleared everything off the credenza in preparation for putting the bookshelves up.

I need to have this room spotless before the conference, and it has been so cold the last few days, it has been really difficult to spend any time out on the porch working on this thing ... my hands keep freezing making it hard to hold a saw or hammer, and the paint gets too thick to spread on the wood.

Originally, I had planned to have the shelves up by today, which would give me two days to clean the office. Now, I'll be lucky if I have them up on the 25th, and then I'm going to have to stay up most of the night getting everything in order.

To top it all off ... the idiot builder who just finished my neighbor's house screwed up the electricity to my house, and refused to fix it. So, my neighbor had to hire an electrician to come and do the repairs ... which he did, today, but that meant that I had no power for much of the day ... and a lot of my power tools are the plug in type.

Plus, I had to spend some time out in the yard with the electrician reburying the power lines that that dippy builder yanked out of the ground (so hard that he actually disconnected the power line). Sort of hard to be building furniture when you are wielding a shovel ....

Oh .... this isn't the rant thread is it .... well, sorry .... I TOLD you not to ask.

I wish it had been either or both of the stupid bastards. Well, at least I found a really good electrician out of all this nonsense.

And, the new table should look good in the bedroom ... although I will have to go back into town to get more wood to make the legs and bracing for it.

Plus, I suppose that it will have to wait until next Friday or Saturday because Marble Falls sort of shuts down entirely over the holidays.

I mean really .... one religious group decides to hold a birthday party (on a date that isn't even a likely candidate for historical accuracy), and everybody else on the planet is supposed to just twiddle their thumbs while next to nothing gets done?? The cheek of some people!!

Judging from the ingredients, that sounds closer to what we call FruitCake over here. Lots of dried fruits, held together by a very little bit of sweet bread batter. Frequently doused with alcohol.
I would say, "Not quite". You see "Christmas Cake" is "Fruit cake", and is more...cake-y. It's also often covered in marzipan and thick white icing, but underneath it all it's essentially fruit cake. Christmas Pudding is definitely far more moist and...pudding-y, owing to the way it's made (boiled and steamed). Thus the reason it goes well smothered in brandy custard (or plain), thickened or whipped cream, and vanilla icecream (note the "and" - people who limit themselves to one selection are quitters!).

Cheers,
Marc (about to go shopping for Christmas foodstuffs, which include ingredients for the 5 Minute Chocolate Mug Cake)

Ricky, if it's a video conference on the 26th, can't you just put a screen round the computer, so that your client never sees the woodwork in progress? Or maybe a vary large Christmas tree? Or just turn off all the lights except for an artfully-placed table lamp?

First, I'd have to find something to use as a screen. Living as I do in the middle of nowhere, this is problematic. Plan two would involve actually going out and purchasing a tree and lights and ornaments to put on the tree, and then setting it up. And, sadly, the only lights in this office tend to be sort of all or nothing .... dark and gloomy, or bright as all get out.

The video conference will be at 1:00 in the afternoon my time, and unless I go so far as to cover up the window, I think it would be best just to get the damn bookcases done and get the place clean and "staged." I should be able to tell how much I need to do just by seeing what will actually be seen from the camera. If I have to leave a lot of stuff on the floor, that will likely be ok.

Heh .... I just thought about how I would explain to my clients why I had a Christmas tree in my office. I think they would suspect that something was very very wrong.

How about using plain, colored bedsheets, for the above-mentioned backdrop screen?

P.S. We've done this. Officially, I mean. Our several ton magnets have to be PREcisely aligned, to the nano-millimeter (or something like that). We had one that was PREcise to the nth-degree --- but off by a whole centimeter. Or was it an inch? Anyway .... this was years ago! But it didn't work right till then found and fixed it
