Hmm, I read this question to be more like - can I let folks access Calibre like a cloud reader, but not be able to download the books (just view them on screen). But I could be wrong...

Yeah, I agree. It appears he/she wants the books viewable and not downloadable. Though if you can view them, you can save them. Shrug...

well the OP should clarify- if still interested

I took "view the content (of the whole collection) but cant download it." to mean see the list and the metadata, not to mean "read books online", but I could be wrong.

but if so, I think we've been here before, with the question phrased as "streaming e-books ", and concluded that all e-reader clients expect to download the book in order to display it for reading ?

the OP left the discussion 14 posts ago, so I doubt we'll ever find out.

See my post (#5). I read it like Ms Fizzy
Also, I am behind the times. I did not know enough about 'Stream Players'. I assumed they were only for ever changing content (Sound and Video)

> the ducks : streaming, as in netflix, amazon video , spotify, quboz, ... is for making encrypted content viewable/listenable, yet at the same time making it hard to steal. the streamed data is encrypted and must be decrypted for playback within a trusted app or device.

I admire the Netflix model which seems to be let's make it so cheap and so easy to access that there's no reason to want to steal it, though it's annoying when they drop a show from their catalogue while you are still only part way through it. Having to now buy Law & Order on DVD is so backwards

Streaming can be done for books; both overdrive and google books offer it, but they are big enough to run the encryption & server infrastructure, and provide the client apps. I don't see that appearing in a calibre content server any time soon. also, both of those services also allow download + read offline.

so your post#5 was spot on

Can I use OverDrive Read without an internet connection?
Yes. On most devices, select Offline Access from the OverDrive Read menu, then the cloud icon to cache (download) an eBook so you can read it offline. Make sure to also bookmark the eBook in your browser or save the eBook's URL so you can get back to it in your browser once you're offline.

and for google:
To read Google Play books when you're not connected to the Internet, you'll need to download them to your device.

On your mobile device
To download books to read them offline:

Make sure you’re connected to the Internet.
Open the Google Play Books app.
Touch the book you want to download.
Once the book has finished downloading to your device, you can read it anywhere even when you don't have an Internet connection.

download & play offline option is also available in spotify premium and in amazon prime video. I have not tried the latter but i see it offered.

You do realize that Google Play Books always downloads the books, and those instructions essentially tell non-tech-savvy users how to download a book before they want to read it...
...so they don't get caught without an internet connection, want to read the book, say "ooh, pretty cover pictures, here's my book", and then "@#*&^ why can't I read my book which is right here".

As for OverDrive Read, I seriously doubt most people read books in their internet browser. Ridiculous hackery is required to turn it (website) into an ereader, and once a book is downloaded into localstorage for reading online, it is already available offline as well.
Also, don't compare websites to apps.

Aside: The calibre content server is currently undergoing a rewrite. IIRC Kovid mentioned some time ago that whenever he got around to the rewrite, among the features he would add is an in-browser version of the ebook-viewer. Modern web design principles say it would use localstorage to store the ebook, and just like OverDrive read would be available offline as well.

I toyed with google books on my Kobo tablet, but i'ts not usable with Amazon devices, as server access is blocked. I suspect it's not one of their great successes, & same goes for google play ( for music). I did let that upload 7000+ MP3s from my PC, as it is yet another free backup, but the browser interface is awful compared with spotify & others.
i thinking you can upload books you already own into google books, like you can mp3 into google play, but again, what's the point ?

are there any statistics on google books market shares ? I could ask google but would it give an honest answer

& I don't get the point of the overdrive browser based reader, when tablets have apps and desktops/laptops have ADE + other free options
