Post Which One Should I Buy?

Hello! I am badly in need of some sort of assistance in purchasinh an eReader!

Here are some information of mine:
1. It will be my first time owning an eReader.
2. I read mostly at night.
3. My eBooks are mostly in epub format.
4. I live in Philippines.
5. I can't get my hands on eit5her one since the bookstore that sells near mine has no stocks available and I have no friends or relatives who uses one.
6. I will be mostly be doing sideloading of files.
7. My antivirus detects the Kobo Desktop App as a virus.

On one hand, here's what I found while doing a research of eReaders available here in Ph:
1. A bookstore near my place is selling Kobo Touch and Glo. However, it may take them a month or so before I get mine. They will be getting the stocks in their branches which have one. Nonetheless, the store offers something like if I buy anything worth Php1000, I get 1000 points in turn. 1000 points = Php10.
2. Kindle Touch, PW and Voyage are available only thru online sellers. I can get mine from Amazon directly but it will cost me more due to customs and everything. Sellers offer freebies.
3. Aura is also available thru an online seller and sells cheaper than the Glo on the bookstore. However, they only offer a 7-Day Store Warranty. And no freebies.
4. Glo, Aura, PW 2014, PW 2015 are on the same price range.

Sorry for so much info but I hope you can help me in deciding which one I should get.

Unless you are picky about some details, I would venture you will be happy with most of them. You didn't mention either the Glo HD or the new PW3, if you can get them that would probably be the most logical choice for you (unless you can get one of the older versions very cheep).

Since you mostly will be doing sideloading, my suggestion would be for you to install Calibre and play around with it before getting the e-reader. (You can download excellent books for free at many places, like https://www.mobileread.com/forums/ebo...&sort=dateline .) You can also buy some free books from Amazon and play around with Alf & his friends.

Just to allay one issue: there is no need for the Kobo Desktop app at all if you have access to wireless internet for setup. The rest of the time you can manage a Kobo with Calibre.

According to the online sellers I've talked to, PW3 won't be available more or less a week from now but the price is still roughly the same with PW2 here. Just a few hundred pesp difference, that is. As for the Glo HD, the only way I could get them will be through ebay's international sellers which I won't bother with as the original selling price + customs taxes is waaaaay higher than the others.

But hey, thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks. I do get your point there. It's just that I want to see the difference between the Kobo Desktop App from the Kindle Desktop App. Like some sort of first hand experience.

In any case you've tried both, how was it?

I have nuked Kobo Desktop, it's a pointless app. Kindle for Mac I only keep around to funnel anything I buy from Amazon through deDRM and into Calibre. Neither has much, if anything, to do with the ereader devices the companies make.

So, will that be Kindle over Kobo then?

If I'm not mistaken, Kindle downloads some sort of backup on a PC/laptop or whatever if you download an ebook from the cloud, right?

No, because as I said, the desktop apps have nothing to do with the devices. At all.

If you buy a book from Amazon, you can download a copy with Kindle for PC/Mac, if you choose to. Is that what you mean? It's neither here nor there to me - I buy books from wherever I want, strip the DRM, and run my own backup system.

Misread your previous post. Sorry. Nonetheless, you did get my point there. Anyway, may I know what are you using in stripping the DRM of your ebooks?

This lack of sleep is really messing with my mind. the stripping which I'm yet to discover will be toomuch to take at the meantime. Anyway, have to go Dream Land for now.

Calibre doesn't contain anything that strips DRM. Google Apprentice Alf for the appropriate tools, which can be used either standalone or as a third-party Calibre plugin.

Now that's something I haven't seen before. I've read people do the stripping thru Calibre but failed to mention Google Apprentice Alf. Thanks for clarifying that one out.

Just go here. We may (as per new forum rules) send you directly to Alf, just not discuss his works in detail

Don't you need the Kobo desktop app and obok if you happen to buy a book that only comes as a kepub?
