Hmm.... It looks like Scribd (not a subscriber) is dumping a heck of a lot of romances

http://the-digital-reader.com/2015/0...too-damn-much/

Because we like to read? A lot?

Bummer. I put off joining as I didn't like having to read through their app. But I know a lot of readers liked them because they had so many romances.

I've tried a subscription twice, but my preferred ereader is my Kindle. Loved their selection, though!

Gotta love Brooklyn's Overdrive. Just finished the first book in an old Jo Beverley series, recommended the other two books over the weekend, and they were available for me today!

I noticed a lot of newer Harlequin category romance titles suddenly being unavailable on Scribd a few days ago. Was wondering what that was about. I prepaid my Subscription during the 50%-off Thanksgiving sale so it's still a good deal, but still, Harlequin was a big draw for me. Oh well.

FWIW, this is the official word from the Scribd CEO:

I still have my subscription. It looks to me this is mostly indie titles that are cluttering up the catalog. Probably titles no one has read since they were up. All the ones in my library are still there. I see better quality coming from this.

I love Scribd, though I use it mainly for Audio. Hopefully they won't pull titles from the audio selections. I do read some in the app, maybe one a month. But I can blow through some audio. Scribd is a great deal for me.

Whiskey Beach by Nora Roberts - $1.99
Kindle | Kobo | Google

Quote:
For more than three hundred years, Bluff House has sat above Whiskey Beach, guarding its shore—and its secrets. But to Eli Landon, it’s home.

A Boston lawyer, Eli has weathered an intense year of public scrutiny and police investigations after being accused of—but never arrested for—the murder of his soon-to-be ex-wife.

He finds sanctuary at Bluff House, even though his beloved grandmother is in Boston recuperating from a nasty fall. Abra Walsh is always there, though. Whiskey Beach’s resident housekeeper, yoga instructor, jewelry maker and massage therapist, Abra is a woman of many talents—including helping Eli take control of his life and clear his name. But as they become entangled in each other, they find themselves caught in a net that stretches back for centuries—one that has ensnared a man intent on reaping the rewards of destroying Eli Landon once and for all.

I think they removed some Harlequin titles over pricing. They got rid of over 20,000 titles from what I understand. Most of the category books from Harlequin are probably still there as they mostly don't exceed the lower price threshold.

But if they were really paying out 60% of cover price for 10% read I can see where, for romance readers in particular, that was costing them more money than they were taking in with the subscription fee.

If a title is about to expire on Scribd there's am message that it's only avialble through a certain date, correct? I think I've only noticed that a couple of times, I'll have to check my library to see if anything else is affected.
I got the yearly subscription to Scribd that was $49 iirc, so it's still a great deal. I'm intrigued by Oyster because of the new feature that adds a blue light filter to the app, though I think Scribd has a better selection of romance.

NA, Free, Stripped From You - Marissa Carmel

Spoiler:
"It doesn't matter how many women touch this body, only one woman has ever touched this soul."

Ryan Pierce doesn’t come from much, doesn’t ask for much, and doesn’t expect much. And he's come to accept that until, Alana Remington. Alana is the girl who struck the match that lit his world on fire. She's the girl who opened his eyes to more. Who made him believe that just because you have nothing, doesn't mean you are nothing. And he loves her fiercely for it. But, just because you come together, doesn’t mean you stay together. One fateful decision rips Ryan and Alana apart and neither of them are ever the same again.

For five years he's regretted that decision, but the deep seeded anger, shame and resentment has kept him from reaching out. And over those five years, a series of moments have spun Ryan's world in a direction he never saw coming. A world ruled by endless nights, infinite women and the name Jack the Stripper. A world, unbeknownst to him, that may just let two severed hearts collide.

Highly recommend this one.

Freebie novella from Harlequin...

Shoulda Been a Cowboy (Copper Ridge) by Maisy Yates
Quote:
In this sexy, sweet prequel novella to her new series, USA TODAY bestselling author Maisey Yates welcomes readers to the charming small town of Copper Ridge, Oregon, where it's never too late for second chances.

There's not much about his teenage years that Jake Caldwell can be proud of. Except maybe for keeping his hands off cute, kindhearted Cassie Ventimiglia. She was the only one who saw him as more than a tattooed rebel who couldn't wait to leave the ranching life behind. Now he's back in Copper Ridge to sell his father's property—and staying right above Cassie's coffee shop. And out of nowhere, the girl he's never forgotten is offering a whole lot more than fresh-baked muffins…

Jake's dark, smoldering appeal hasn't changed one bit. But Cassie has. Following everyone else's rules didn't quite work out. Time to ask for what she's always wanted…and what Jake's more than happy to give: a wild, hot romance that could make a one-time bad boy realize he's back for good.

Don't miss Part Time Cowboy, the first in the Copper Ridge series, from HQN Books!

Ever After at Sweetheart Ranch: A Valentine Valley Novel by Emma Cane - $1.99
Quote:
Emma Cane's Valentine Valley series returns, as a teacher and her cowboy crush kindle sparks—and something more—in the town that lives up to its name . . .

The only thing hotter than a cowboy . . .

Math teacher Lyndsay De Luca never surprised anyone—least of all herself—until this summer. First, she secretly published her debut romance novel. Then, she started dating Will Sweet, the cowboy of her dreams. And now, Lyndsay's scrambling to hide the juiciest tidbit of all: that the hazel-eyed hero of her steamy fiction is the same guy whose kisses have become her mind-blowing reality.

. . . Is a cowboy in love.

Ever since Will's high-school sweetheart died in a tragic accident, he hasn't been able to commit to a long-term relationship. Lyndsay is the first woman in years who's been able to catch—and keep—his attention. When they team up to teach Valentine's teens about ranch life, Will discovers it's not just her sexy-as-hell smile that has him hooked. Will she be the one to finally break down the walls around his guarded heart?

I don't know. Big names like Susan Mallery, Maggie Shayne & Kasey Michaels appear to have had their titles greatly reduced to almost nothing. No doubt a lot of indies got the boot (and in some cases that could be a good thing) and Mark Coker has said that 80-90% of Smashwords distributed Romance is being dropped including some that are very high profile sellers.

Another article about it...
http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/b...ance-list.html
Quote:
The cuts in romance titles will happen across the board with all romance publishers and self-publishers.

Much like health club memberships, the e-book subscription model is based on the presumption of moderate use. Romance fans buck this assumption, however, and this, Coker explained, has become an issue. “Bottom line, romance readers are reading Scribd out of house and home,” he wrote. This problem, Coker added, is not happening with other genres.
