Free today on Amazon UK (Endeavour press) - Flight of Death by Richard Hoyt
'When Private Eye John Denson is sent to the town of Sixkiller, Washington, it seems to be a straight-forward investigation. The Harkenriders have been found with fifty marijuana plants on their property, and they claim they have no idea how they got there. John’s attention is momentarily distracted from his investigation, however, when he meets the beautiful ornithologist Jenny MacIvar on his drive into Sixkiller. She’s there to perform a controversial endangered owl count, one which sets out to prove that the surrounding forests should be protected from the logging which employs many of the locals. Jenny’s also on the trail of an owl killer, determined to find out who wrung the endangered creature’s neck, and why. John finds himself in the midst of a turf war between the loggers and the environmentalists, and things are rapidly getting nasty. When Jenny’s body turns up in the river, a shotgun-hole through her chest, John suspects there’s more to her apparently senseless murder than meets the eye. Could the Harkenrider case, the MacIvar murder and the strange killing of an endangered owl all somehow be linked? And can John find out what – or who – is at the root of Sixkiller’s troubles before anyone else gets hurt? Open Road just emailed me with info about three first-in-series mysteries on sale...no idea for how long. (Per eReaderIQ, all seem to have dropped around June 1, so possibly for the month of June ???)
The email indicates they are on sale at Amazon, BN and Apple. I checked Kobo US, and all seem to be on sale there too as well, although for more, but Open Road is usually couponable, so you might come out ahead there if you have a coupon. Amazon US links/prices: Lonely Hearts by John Harvey (Charlie Resnick series, #1) is $1.99 link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006ZE1I1K/ Spoiler:
The 7th Victim by Alan Jacobson (Karen Vail series, #1) is $2.51. link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KLOY3ZS/ Spoiler:
Dead Man's Thoughts by Carolyn Wheat (Cass Jameson series, #1) is $2.83. link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RWJPR2I/ Spoiler:

Free again from the author('s republishing consortium) BooksBNimble via Kobo & Amazon:
Love Bites by screen actress (and voice of Catwoman on Batman: The Animated Series & DCAU spinoffs, which TBH, is the only place I've ever actually seen her work) Adrienne Barbeau (IMDB, Wikipedia), 2nd in her Vampyres of Hollywood series of humorous tinseltown paranormal police procedurals, originally out from Thomas Dunne in 2010, @ Amazon (KDP Select, so should be available worldwide for another day or so). NOT YOUR MAMA’S POLICE PROCEDURAL--A COP STORY WITH BITE…AND ROMANCE! Not to mention sharp, cutting wit. Detective Peter King and movie star Ovsanna Moore are the sexiest tongue-in-cheek crime-solving duo since MOONLIGHTING hit the air waves in the ‘80s. But they may remind you more of TRUE BLOOD’s Sookie and Eric than Maddie and David—because one of them’s a vampire. And like Sookie’s Bon Temps, their Los Angeles has its fair share of shapeshifting sometime-humans. Ovsanna’s the successful owner of her own Hollywood film studio and the star of 17 blockbuster horror films, plus three, sadly, that went straight to video. But even vampires have bad days. Though never fat days or bad hair days—she looks pretty great for 450. And in those four and a half centuries she’s pretty much seen everything, formed an opinion about it, and developed the kind of worldly-wise wit Joan Rivers only dreams about. Peter, on the other hand, is a Beverly Hills cop firmly rooted in human affairs, from the domestic issues of his lively Italian family to the romantic ones of his neighbor, snake dancer Suzie Q. Though Ovsanna’s had flings with everyone from Genghis Khan to Errol Flynn, Peter’s got what it takes to catch her eye and hold her interest. And he’s one hell of a detective. He's also a consummate master of spin, concealing what he knows about the world of vampires, werewolves, and shapeshifters while solving the crimes they commit. These ones have been repeats from within the past year which have gone off KDP Select exclusive-ization and have since become available in other stores as introductory 1st-in-series freebies for a while now, so just the titles with brief descriptive linkage: Samson's Deal by Shelley Singer (SYKM), 1st in her Vicente & Samson series of cozy-ish mysteries starring a Jewish ex-cop and his lesbian carpenter sidekick in Berkeley, California, originally out from St. Martin's Press in 1983 @ Kobo and thence price-matched in selected regions @ Amazon (new ASIN, I think, which now makes it a DRM-free version, available to Canadians). Dead Sober by Elizabeth Zelvin (SYKM), 1st in her Bruce Kohler series of humorous mysteries starring the eponymous recovering alcoholic in Manhattan, originally out under the title Death Will Get You Sober from Minotaur in 2008, @ Kobo & thence price-matched in selected regions @ Amazon (available to Canadians). Crooked Man by Tony Dunbar (SYKM), 1st in his Edgar Award-nominated Tubby Dubonnet series of humorous murder mysteries starring the eponymous foodie lawyer in New Orleans, originally out from Putnam in 1994 @ Kobo & thence price-matched in selected regions @ Amazon (available to Canadians). Louisiana Hotshot by Edgar Award-winner Julie Smith (SYKM, Wikipedia), 1st in her Talba Wallis series of humorous PI procedurals starring an African-American poet and computer whiz in New Orleans, originally out from Tor's Forge imprint in 2001 @ Kobo & thence price-matched in selected regions @ Amazon (available to Canadians). Just a reminder that if you happen to enjoy any of these and wish to read more, now that BBN's catalogue has started filtering back into non-Amazon venues, they're couponable @ Kobo (and mostly, but not all, DRM-free), and there are currently two of Julie Smith's backlist titles on sale for just 99 cents each (at least one of them has previously been recently free within the past 2 years, IIRC). |

Bargain @ $2.99 CAD from Random House Canada for today only (Jun 24th) @ Kobo Canada (not couponable) and price-matched in other Canadian stores:
Cockroaches by Norwegian crime writer Jo Nesbø (SYKM, Wikipedia), 2nd in his popular Harry Hole series starring the eponymous intrepid alcoholic Oslo-based Inspector in an overseas adventure taking place in Bangkok. I've read this and liked it (and in fact bought a copy the last time it was on special), and it's an okay installment in the series, but nowhere near as good as the actual cases that take place in Norway. This is the Kobo Daily Deal for Canada (a repeat), and gives an extra $2, just for today, off the current sale price of $4.99 that it's been at for the past couple of weeks. ETA: I should note that Nesbø's books usually cost $9.99-$12.99 CAD regularly, although there are money-saving omnibuses available (this 2nd is not included in either of them). Description The thrilling sequel to Jo Nesbo's debut novel, The Bat, The Cockroaches sees Harry Hole sent to Bangkok to investigate the murder of the Norwegian ambassador. Detective Harry Hole arrives in a steaming hot Bangkok. But it's work, not pleasure. The Norwegian ambassador has been found dead in a seedy motel room, and no witnesses have come forward. The ambassador had close ties to the Norwegian prime minister, and to avoid a scandal Harry is sent there to hush up the case. But he quickly discovers that there is much more going on behind the scenes and very few people willing to talk. When Harry lays hands on some CCTV footage that will help him unravel what happened that night, things only get more complicated. The man who gave him the tape goes missing, and Harry realises that failing to solve a murder case is by no means the only danger in Bangkok. Last edited by ATDrake; 06-24-2015 at 06:15 PM. |

Free from the author('s republishing consortium) via KDP Select @ Amazon:
Venetian Mask by Michaela Thompson (SYKM), her standalone contemporary vacationing-couples-games-turn-deadly murder mystery set in Venice during Carnival, originally out from Penguin in 1988 under her Mickey Friedman pseudonym. This was a 1988 Macavity Award finalist for Best Novel, according to SYKM. MURDER AT CARNIVAL IN THE FLOATING CITY The surreal splendor of Venice glitters and mesmerizes as six so-called friends who, it turns out, barely know each other meet at Carnival to play a malignant game that quickly turns murderous. Sally, the “Tallahassee lassie” spurned by the rest as a virtual hayseed, is swept up by a mysterious count, attending masked balls, operas, and Carnival revels even as she mourns her marriage and dodges a deadly pursuer. “Things should happen at Carnival,” says her unlikely protector, who resembles Harlequin in more than his costume. “If they go on just the same, there’s no reason for Carnival at all.” There’s absolutely no chance of that in this psychological tour de force of surging identities wrestling to emerge in people forced by violence to confront their inner Harlequins and Medusas. The characters change costumes, alter egos, sex partners (and preferences), and most of all, their stories while Carnival swirls around them, each more desperate by the hour to solve the murder, commit another, save a career, escape a past…whatever it is that Carnival, as much a character as the humans, seems to command them to do. The guignol grows ever grander, the danger more heightened as the clock ticks toward midnight on Fat Tuesday and Sally finds she has more enemies than she thought. |
