I didn't even get around to seeing if the comments were downloaded with a book. I just noticed that in the cloud book details they were often missing. Glad to see you have solved the issue.

The :else: is optional. All of the templates are arbitrary: single or multiple values. The test is "true" if that template evaluates to some non-blank value. A special symbol will be available, :tv: (test value) that can be used in a :then: or an :else: to replace the test with itself.

All if the if/then/elses will be processed first, then the template will be processed as normal. This means that the :then: and :else: parts can add slashes to change the directory structure.

This is great. I will check that out as soon as Calibre 2.32 is released

For sure we will need a separate thread for CC templates with user examples in the future

I also saw no comments in the cloud book details - sorry I wasn't specific. I now see comments on some books, but not all.

Where are you not seeing the comments? In CC Cloud or in CC itself? If in CC Cloud then did you try it with V4.0.0h? If so, could you send me your metadata.db and the name of the book so I can find out what is special about that book? If in CC itself then that means that the book didn't receive its comments when you originally downloaded it. Either download it again or connect as a wireless device.

I am not seeing the comments in CC cloud V4.0.0h. I will send the db and book names.

It looks like the comments in the cloud are there for all the ones I randomly used as a benchmark.

But after reading Terisa de morgan's comment (83) I found a book that is on my device that shows comments in CC but the same book in the CC cloud does not show the comment. I opened calibre and verified that the book in question does have a comment.

When I fetch the data from the database for book details I build a structure that contains all the base metadata. This involves several 4-line database queries that are *almost* exactly the same. I copied the one from comments to do series but messed up editing one place. Bottom line: a book will have its comments if it is a member of a series.

Most of my books are in a series so I never saw it.

Thanks to all of you, and especially Purple Lady for sending me her metadata.db and the name of a failing book. That immensely simplified finding the problem.

BTW: I found and fixed another problem because there are no covers in the library made with Purple Lady's metadata.db. What would have been a rare crash case caused by missing cover files became relatively common.

A release is forthcoming.

Glad you found it. In hindsight it is obvious.

Karma to Lady Purple for sending in the metadata.db file so I didn't have to.

Same here about series. Now you say it, yes, that's the problem with the book. Thank you for the changes and yes, the book shows the comments fine now.

I finally got around to testing on one of my e-ink devices and I discovered that the compressed preferences layout didn't work. Category text was black on black. To fix this I have changed (yet again) how preference categories are displayed. The attachment shows you what they look like. I hope this is the last change.

It looks fine on my T62 both with and without a check in the color correct setting.

It looks find on my Energy Pro too (color correct setting). And it connects to dropbox flawlessly.
