The truth is, any dope can not only get published, but have books SOLD in today's new world. But it used to be the dopes had to get very lucky or be smart enough to manage to get published at all. LeGuin's non writing skills just don't have the value they once had and she finds that bothersome, since it was FUN to be a published author in the old days when so many people with something to say, couldn't get published. Being one myself, I know a cranky old person who feels the world is passing her by, when I see one. |

Oh, c'mon! Don't you remember the good ol' days when you could buy a book sight unseen and just know that it would be great? And for the one or two in a million that weren't; I for one, took great comfort in the fact that the book I was thoroughly hating was, at least, grammatically correct and the words were spelled right. Made it easier to keep slogging through it to the end. Last edited by DiapDealer; 06-13-2015 at 11:21 AM. |

If it means Windows Computer, then it's totally wrong. There are free reading apps for Mac, iOS, Android, and there is Cloud Reader for Linux or just about any other system. Aside from actually using a Kindle or converting the book of course. If it means Water Closet, I guess that makes sense. Lots of folks do all their reading there for sure. Not having one might fall under TMI, but I won't judge. |

I'm guessing @aardbewoner meant Amazon has no native Linux reading app (Cloud Reader aside), nor are there any native Linux apps for reading epubs with Adobe's encryption. Which is true. But hell... I love my Linux machines, too, but I've never once wanted read a book on on one of 'em. | |

That stir up things Basically I use WC because most assume a PC = WC. I do wonder if that Cloud Reader can read things i buy from amazon.(what i will not !) Would be funny if you can read in a browser without additional stuff. |

If you're willing to run Kindle for PC and ADE under wine, and fiddle with the software from Apprentice Alf, you can read books bought at Amazon and ADE retailers on any device that calibre can convert to..

There are versions of Adobe Digital Editions that work flawlessly under Crossover Office or Wine on Linux. Version 1.7.2 works well for me. On Sabayon with a KDE Desktop it is as simple as dragging the acsm file from Dolphin into the ADE Window. The epub downloaded to Digital Editions can then be imported into Calibre. If you never buy anything with DRM you miss out on a lot. With Apprentice Alf, there is no need for you to miss out at all. |

And if you feel compelled to buy only DRM-free books as a matter of principle, then the topic of reading-app compatibility is fairly moot anyway. You have many choices in reading methods (on many platforms) for DRM-free material. If you WANT to buy/read DRMed kindle books on Linux, there are ways. If you DON'T want to buy/read DRMed material, then this discussion is pointless. Last edited by DiapDealer; 06-28-2015 at 08:11 AM. |
