Well, Bridget Jones's Diary was a fun read. I believe that I'll netflix the movie.

A few books that I have read lately and enjoyed.

A Long Time Until Now by Michael Z. Williamson.
A small military unit is thrust back into Paleolithic times with only their guns and portable hardware.

Ten soldiers on convoy in Afghanistan suddenly find themselves lost in time. Somehow, they arrived in Earth's Paleolithic Asia. With no idea how they arrived or how to get back, the shock of the event is severe. They discover groups of the similarly displaced: Imperial Romans, Neolithic Europeans, and a small cadre of East Indian peasants. Despite their technological advantage, the soldiers only have ten people, and know no way home. Then two more time travelers arrive from a future far beyond the present. These time travelers may have the means to get back, but they aren't giving it up. In fact, they may have a treacherous agenda of their own, one that may very well lead to the death of the displaced in a harsh and dangerous era.

But, this is not your typical take over and make a better world time travel book. This book does have some action, but it is more concerned with how they manage to survive and the problems inherent in not having a tech base.

I also read both of Mike Shepherd's (Mike Moscoe) Vicky Peterwald books, Target and Survivor. This is a spin off of his popular Kris Longknife Series. I enjoyed both as I have the Kris Longknife Series. I recommend both. I enjoy watching as Vicky Peterwald grows from spoiled princess to a mature leader.

I also just finished Joshua Dalzelle's first two books of his Black Fleet Trilogy. The third is due out later this year and I am looking forward to it. If you like Military Science Fiction you should enjoy this trilogy.

Sorry - Crown of the Isles series. And an excellent conclusion to the series it was.


Next up: Pyramid Power by Eric Flint and Dave Freer. It's ben a long time since I read Pyramid Scheme, but no doubt I'll pick things up fairly quickly. I bought this one back in February 2007!


And with this one my TBR is back to what it was at the start of the year: 750 unread ebooks. I'm hoping to take that down to 700 by the end of the year.

Why do some of you quote yourselves? I never seen it anywhere else on any other forum, except here. I'm genuinely curious for the reasons, because to me it looks like you are talking to yourselves in a way. Which again, is kinda weird for a forum, where people usually talk to other people. On top of that visually it creates a kind of a clutter in a thread.

It's natural to do so in this thread, if you say that you're starting a book in one post, and then have further comments on it once you've finished it.

You mean it's usual to do so. Ok but only some people do it, and it's still not a real reason.
I'm curious about why they do it, not that it's common here. I know that it is. And it's very unusual compared to other forums. And I would like to hear it from people who actually do it. I haven't seen you participating in this.

There's no reason why if further comments are needed a quotation of your previous post is essential.

I usually do it, when I'm acknowledging the finishing of one book, and the starting of another. There can be a significant gap since the first of the two posts, and this keeps the context of the thread of my reading. I appreciate it when others do it as well -- I do follow what others are reading, especially those I've found to be good indicators of what I'm likely to enjoy. And the quote of the original starting post gives context for the commentary on the book finished, and the next being started.

I do it for two reasons:

(1) so that I don't have to repeat title/author of a book I'm commenting on, having just finished it - my (trimmed) quote of myself does that
(2) to make a thread out of my comments so that I can easily go back through my comments about books I've read, so that I can easily remind myself what I've been reading.

Two books completed:

"Tomb of the Golden Bird", by Elizabeth Peters. The 18th and penultimate book in the "Amelia Peabody" series of Egyptological mysteries. This book tells the story of the events surrounding the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, with the (unreported!) aid of the Emerson family. Great fun, and I'll be sad to finish this series - it's an old friend.

"Wizardry Compiled" by Rick Cook, originally bought from Baen in 2001. When Cupertino programmer William Irving Zumwalt, "Wiz" to his friends, was brought to another world and used his programming skills to become a great wizard (as told in "Wizard's Bane") he thought his troubles were over, but he's made some powerful enemies who are out to kill him. Excellent fantasy, particularly if one understands the computer programming jokes! Recommended.
