In my experience, no. They are subject to catastrophic failure and I've had several quit working over the years. Same as CDs, but I often made two copies on CD and kept them in separate locations (plus a backup on hard drive and the original on a different drive).

I may even have a stack of them unopened in the basement (and a couple of drives), if anyone is interested (I started needing larger capacity and they sat on the supply shelf). Other than such small stashes, I don't think you can get new ones anymore.

None of my zip disks are still working. It could be the drive I suppose. I started with four drives.

I do however have a couple of CD-Rs that are about 20 years old and I could still read as of last year. They are gold archival disks that cost about $30 a piece in spindles of 100 when I bought them. They were burned in a 1X burner in 1996 or 1995.

Today's freebie from audiobooks.com looks pretty good - "Great American Stories." It includes classic shorts from Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, Ambrose Bierce, and Jack London. The site lists it as Blackstone Audio, but this is an older BBC/AudioGo production. Good until tomorrow at 10 Eastern.
