From this I bought it, and also added the audible edition for $2 more. We are going on vacation this week, and need something to listen to in the car. I hope it's not too scarry/goory or my wife might not like it.

Next up, Dog Warrior, the 4th book in Wen Spencer's Ukiah Oregon series. Though it has been so long since I read the third book in the series, I may drop back and read it first. We'll see. Meanwhile, finished listening to Sharpe's Rifles, #6 in the Richard Sharpe series from Bernard Cornwell. Definitely going to read more of them! |

I got it really cheap as an Amazon eBook when it was on sale. It is back to $7.99 now, it is true. The audiobook, I used an Audible credit for. I hear you about waiting for it at the library. With the news about some movement on adapting it for a miniseries, I bet there is a run on it.

I didn't find neither scary nor overly gory, however the first is very personal. I would classify the first 75% as a psychological horror and the last part as a sci-fi horror. |

Like some of them do, this book has been sitting in my head for years. Back when I was in college, I wrote a short story called “The Albuquerque Door” for a junior year creative writing class. It dealt with several of the same ideas in this book, but with a much smaller cast of characters and on a much less talented level. Needless to say, it didn’t go over well with the instructor’s “literary” tastes, and while I didn’t agree with him on a lot of his points, it left me feeling bad enough about the story that I just filed it away. It was around 2006 when I came across that story again and realized, through more experienced eyes, that it could be expanded into a novel. I put some work into it and ended up with about 30,000 words of a book tentatively titled Mouth. It was at this point that a few different things lined up and Mouth was put aside so I could work on this idea I had of superheroes fighting a zombie apocalypse. Jump ahead to December of 2012. My lovely lady and I were driving home from a small Christmas party, and I was bouncing ideas off her for a possible sequel to a semi-popular book I’d written called 14. And it struck me that a bunch of elements from Mouth lined up with some things from that book, and they could go together quite well. Although, the more I thought about it, the more I thought it’d work better as a side-quel sort of story—more of a shared universe than a continuation of the same story. As he says it's a side-quel ![]() |

Just finished "The Serpent on the Crown" by Elizabeth Peters, the 17th book in the "Amelia Peabody" series of Egyptological mysteries. It's now 1922, and the Emerson family are approached by a lady novelist of cheap sensationalist books who claims that a golden statue her collector husband had bought was cursed, and the cause of his death. This novel is basically setting the scene for the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb the following year by Howard Carter, the events of which are described in the next book in the series. Very good indeed.

A quick read: "Fiddler Fair" by Mercedes Lackey, originally bought from Baen in October 2001. A lightweight but enjoyable collection of SF and fantasy tales originally published in various magazines and anthologies. Recommended.

Yes, an excellent read. I've got the DT version here, along with the eBook version off of the Baen CD for This Scepter'd Isle. Must be about time to wander through it again.
