"All-New" Kindle Paperwhite with 300ppi display - June 30th

I've preordered it I have an eye condition, and am really pleased to have the higher resolution on the paperwhite. The voyage hasn't been released in Canada yet, and the poor exchange on our dollar made ordering a voyage from the US a bit to pricy.

I tried the buttons on my Voyage for a while. Well, I say "tried" but really I just left them turned on and never remembered to use them. I'm used to swiping so that's what I did.

On the Voyage the buttons don't determine where or how you hold it. During the time I left them turned on I think I accidentally turned a page once. I forget how long they were turned on. Probably about a week of heavy reading. I often held the thing where the buttons were. You have to use a certain amount of pressure to turn the page and you have settings to let you adjust that. I think I had mine at the default medium pressure setting most of the time. I did some experimenting so I'm not sure.

Anyway I finally turned off page press. I just didn't use it except when I was experimenting. As for that single accidental page turn, I do that as often with my Paperwhite and my Kobo and the Voyage with the buttons turned off.

If you don't like the buttons you can really just forget about them. If you want them you can adjust them to suit. For me it's a totally useless feature but I have to admit they did a good job with it for those who want it.

By the way, my first Kindle, a Kindle 3, was the one I had the most accidental page turns on. Then I got a Touch and that problem just went away. I never saw the buttons as a real problem but they were a minor annoyance and I'm glad they're gone.

No, I used them, turned them on and everything, obviously. The screens are very similar. They are both quite zippy. I quite liked the buttons on the Voyage but at first I thought they were not always responding, then realized the Voyage (and PW) can only turn pages at a rate slower than earlier gen readers such as a Nook ST or Sony T2. Dunno why. It's the same on the Kobo.

But the two were both very similar apart from the buttons. Very similar quality screen. Identical software and features. Same speed. The Voyage case is a bit snazzier but no big deal. So yeah, there's not a lot between them. Two shades of vanilla.

Depends on if the flush (more durable?) screen, PagePress "buttons", smaller size/lower weight and light sensor are significant to you or not I suppose.

I was speaking of my immediate first impressions on using the devices next to each other. The difference between them was a lot less than I expected it to be.

Jon, the standard-issue premium Kobo unit is also outsold by the peasant devices. Because no one expects the premium device to be the biggest seller -- that is why it is the premium super-duper special one!

It's not just the H2O that has the typesetting features. Other Kobo Readers also have them. What I'm trying to get at is that to use the typesetting of RMDSK, one does not need any special coding. It seems there needs to be something done to Kindle eBooks to enable the new typesetting. I just want to know why and how to enable the new typesetting.

if you search - there was a huge thread recently about how to turn the new typesetting OFF - started by a kindle self-publishing author who reckoned some of his books were getting messed up.
you may find answers therein, as the poster doggedly persued it with amazon and via various tests and feedback from others.... search for kindle hyphenation as I don't have the thread link to hand

You quoted me, but you seem to be replying to something I never said.

Perhaps you accidentally replied to the wrong thread -- there are for some reason two parallel threads about the new PW3, and your post fits better there I think.

I agree. The smaller, lighter form-factor of the Voyage is definitely significant to me. That alone is worth the extra cost for me. I understand others would consider the smaller/lighter size insignificant and couldn't care less about the page-press buttons or light sensor, etc. But that's why Amazon made the PW3 -- for those who find the extra Voyage features "insignificant." But as eschwartz points out, just because some people don't value these features doesn't make them insignificant for everybody. As I said before, options are good!

I'm interested in reading this thread, but my search skills failed me. I tried "kindle hyphenation" but couldn't find the thread you're referring to. Was "hyphenation" in the thread title? Additional keyword suggestions appreciated. Thanks!
