I'm wondering this, too. I thought I read somewhere (maybe Nate's blog or another thread here? I can't remember) that the hyphenation may just be a matter of proper CSS, which means if you're familiar with CSS and willing to tinker, you may be able to turn hyphenation on/off yourself.

I'm particularly interested in what this means for ebooks converted to AZW3 using Calibre.

We're not really sure what CSS has to be added to the file, but Amazon said that they would add it automatically.

Not at this time, no.

I know a couple developers who have tried to force the issue by reverse engineering the changes and then adding the new css to their ebooks before uploading or sideloading them. It didn't work.

Also, emailing an ebook to your Kindle account won't do it either.

I believe Active Content was simply marked as incompatible. At least I can confirm that people who jailbroke their Kindle Voyage were able to run KUAL, an Active Content-based application and script launcher developed in our Kindle Developers Corner.
So it appears that the framework wasn't stripped out of the firmware -- not even for devices that NEVER officially supported Active Content.

Why the heck did Amazon do something so stupid? This then makes the Kobo Glo HD a much better Reader because the advanced typography just works. If your font supports kerning you get kerning. If your font supports ligatures, you get ligatures. If you read in full justification, you get hyphens unless the CSS code says not to use hyphens. It just works where Amazon has some secret crap that needs to be added and might only work when the eBook is DRMed.

Do any of the eBooks listed come without DRM? If not, maybe the secret code and DRM are key?

Is the person who did the PW3/2/voyage video on this forum. I'd like to ask him to convert the book used in the video to epub then back to kf8 and see if the PW3 displays it differently. Be ashamed if all the new features only work on Amazon prepared books.

Can you also ask Len to show us the different Kindles using the same font and also to show us the font light?

I know this means redoing the video, but he left some rather important things out of the video and the different fonts aren't really meaningful for a proper comparison.
