Just finished reading the "mini-novel" Astrid, the Dragonslayer's Blacksmith by Resa Nelson.

Liked it so much that I bought the first book in the series it is based on, The Dragonslayer's Sword.

Last night I finished 14 by Peter Clines. About an apartment building with secrets. Nate moves into this apartment in Los Angeles where the rent is cheap and even include all the utilities. However, he finds some strange things in the building; the light in his kitchen is black light, no matter what kind of light bulb he puts in it. There are several room locked with several padlocks and the caretaker doesn't like questions asked about these oddities. Together with a growing group of curious fellow tenants Nate tries to unravel the mysteries of the Kavach Building.

It's heavily inspired by H.P. Lovecraft and admits to that. I would have liked it if Clines would have written more about what happens in the last couple of chapters (can't tell what it is because it would spoil the surprise).

I'm reading now new book by him, The Fold. It's a sci-fi book with also a Lovecraftian influence. I really like it a lot. It's written well, the characters are good ( something I find a lot of sci-fi books lack), and the suspense and action is done well.
I never read anything by him, but I will definitely put "14" on my list now.
The Fold is also kind of a mix between sci-fi and horror.

I love the Joe Picket series and read this one as soon as it came out. I agree, it is one of his best! Wish he wrote faster....

I just finished Louise Penny's 5th Chief Inspector Gamache book -- The Brutal Telling -- wonderful! Love this series. I have the next one (Bury Your Dead) on hold, but in the meantime I'm reading the 2nd Maisie Dobbs book -- Birds of a Feather (author: Jacqueline Winspear) and enjoying it very much.

Oh, also recently finished the 7th book in The Project series- "The Ajax Protocol" by Alex Lukeman (10 books in all, latest one came out last month "The Solomon Scroll"). Kind of over the top, secret govt special ops team (like the others) but a quick, fun read.

Wow, Clementine was a pretty good read. But, I seemed to be needing to take a break from the Steampunk genre. I tried starting to read a couple new selections in the genre and quickly put them aside for later. Finally I picked a non-Steampunk non-magic non-fantasy genre selection and have now jumped into...

Bridget Jones's Diary
(Bridget Jones #1) by Helen Fielding. after which I have 2 other books scheduled...

The Lovely Bones
by Alice Sebold and...

Away With The Fairies
(Phryne Fisher, #11) by Kerry Greenwood.

It's a really good book, and it's relatively new-- they even note the recovery of Richard III's remains...

@ReneAZ -- If you haven't discovered the wonderful Phryne Fisher series from Kerry Greenwood, then I highly recommend it. The first book in the series is Cocaine Blues:

From some of the other books I see you read and like, should be a good fit.

Finished both of these yesterday. Yes, I had to renew The Black Lung Captain because I didn't finish it before the expiration date. Now I'm reading Strangers in Death, #26 in J. D. Robb's series starring police lieutenant Eve Dallas and The Christmas Cantata by Mark Schweizer. Listening to Confessions of a Murder Suspect by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro.

Reading "You Know Me Al" by Ring Lardner. Excellent book about mid-1910's baseball and the Chicago White Sox, and human frailty. Since it was published in 1916, there's nothing about the Black Sox scandal, but it helped me understand the things that made it possible.
