Enjoying my 3rd espresso of the day (and it's only 11:30am). My excuses:

I'm recovering from spending yesterday with some relatives and their 1 and 4 year old iPoods -- delightfully charming little monkeys with a mischevious streak a couple of miles wide
I'm about to have to go Christmas shopping with by better half, and she keeps saying the dreaded word "clothes"
I really want to get a bit more of Escape Committee and Friday Question done later today...

well it's 12:30 here and i've got none of the mitigating factors you've listed but i think i need another cup too, if for no other reason than that... it's monday.

good luck braving the dreaded clothes stores 3 days before christmas ! :shudder:

Think of clothes as a very expensive Christmas wrapping. Someone at one of the green blogs I read had suggested it. Two gifts in one. Just make sure you don't use epoxy glue or trim with scissors to fit.

Yesterday we took down the four, 3-metre tall panel sliding louvre doors that lead off the atrium into one of the bedrooms, and then I tore it all apart (being from the "when all you've got is a hammer..." school) to get it into bin-dumpable bits (this may take a few months of bin-stuffing).

Today we bought ham, turkey and pork, christmas cake and christmas pie. Since there's only going to be three of us, there may be some leftovers. The rest of the day we ripped up and replaced with hardwood some rotting floorboards in the gazebo/cabana/Bali hut/thing next to the pool that has the daybed under it and from where you serve drinks to people at the pool bar (a good thing to remember when thinking of getting a pool with a pool bar? Making sure you've got someone to serve you at it, otherwise they're just seats). This board-replacing involved the mighty hammer once again (not just for knocking in nails, but for knocking rotten boards out).

Then I went for a swim.

Tomorrow we go out shopping "for Christmas food", which begs the question, "What are ham, turkey and pork, christmas cake and christmas pie?". Also, new concertina shutter-doors get put on to replace the old sliders I destroyed.

Right now, I'm about to go to bed.

I'd love to see clotted cream come out of a snowblower. That's a somewhat comforting image.

I am familiar with all of the above except Christmas pie, unless you are referring to pumpkin pie, which is traditional in Canada for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Pie is usually topped with whipped cream.

Finishing up a few things in the office this afternoon, then taking off until Jan 2. The university shuts down between Christmas and New Year, giving me more time for friends, family, and the MR Lounge.

I miss those 2 week breaks at Christmas. That was one of the cool things about working at a college.

Aaaah! Pumpkin pie with loads of nutmeg! Hmmmm! But that was last month.

In Québec at Christmas, we make a Christmas log. It's a chcolate thin cake rolled up and covered with whipped cream and berries.

ah, the famous christmas bûche. here often they are ice cream cakes, or else they are usually bought in the store. i don't like those, personally. too much butter cream.

now, pumpkin pie, on the other hand...
