But I'd settle for a remote-friendly FBreader.
The treadmill reading crowd would love it.

The article's author says more details will probably be available on the site Monday, but if I'm reading this right, the process isn't exactly a walk in the park. Nevertheless he intends to show proof of concept.

And, no, it's not trivial. But it is proof that Echo can become the hub of an "internet of things" home network, controlling not just Audio book playback or lights but an entire home theater system or home security system. First thing that comes to mind is assisting people with physical limitations. Right now, those operations need full PCs and pricey accessories. Pretty soon it might be doable by mixing and matching consumer gadgets.

This kind of hacker experimentation is a lot of fun to watch. And it points at things that might be headed our way if Lab126 is paying attention. (They are supposed to be doing a lot of work on home automation.)

The review breakout is interesting.
First, the sheer number: well over 18,000.
(For comparison, FIRE TV has 30k and Fire TV stick 44K generated over a full year and six months respectively. Total sales of ~4.5M.)

Either they got a lot of people worked up enough to write reviews or they really got a lot of invitation requests. (And sales.) Probably both.

Second, the spread.
97% think it is good or better, 90% think it is very good or better.

I suspect invitations weren't sent "first come, first served" but probably based on the purchase history. Gadget fans preferred.

Those ratios will not hold now that it is in full release but... 18,000 is a lot of reviews. That 4.5 star ratio is going to hold up for awhile.

There is some clever marketing at Lab126...

I gave her 3 stars in my review. She totally ignores my husband no matter what he says. She only understands me 75% of the time. I have to repeat myself alot to get her to just tell weather or time.

I'd be amazed if a lot of the reviews are legit. They can say verified purchase, but we can't prove anything differently.

I have a friend that bought one of these. It doesn't understand her most of the time, it turns itself off, plays music at random times, and rarely finds the prime playlist she asks for. She usually has to use the app on her phone to select her prime playlists. Often it plays the first song and then cuts out. She has to use the app to choose her Audible book also. Either she got a defective unit or the quality control isn't great.

Her place is quiet... no kids... nothing to interfere with it. Makes me glad I didn't keep the Echo shipped to me.

i have one and have been using it with almost no problems. alexa understands me most of the time. the only problem i've had is asking for today's weather and saying so fast that alexa puts 'sweater' on my shopping list. if i slow down a bit, she interprets perfectly. no trouble with my playlists on the various music services that i linked.
