Spoiler:
I think I've read the sequel some time ago, and I don't feel the urge to revisit it. Next up: Fantasy Magazine #1. My backissues from the recent LightSpeed Kickstarter have turned up - 57 back-issues of semi-prozine Fantasy Magazine, now defunct sister-publication of Lightspeed Magazine. I finished Ancillary Sword by Ann Leckie. I really liked it, and am a bit annoyed with myself for putting it off for so long. I was far too worried that it wouldn't be able to follow the first book. It feels quite different, and it's very much a second book in a trilogy, in that it leaves some big questions unresolved, but it was still very readable.
I've also just finished Sudden Blow by Liz Brady, an award-winning crime novel set in Toronto. This was part of my alphabetic detectives challenge (Jane Yeats, for Y), and I don't think I'd have read it otherwise. It was OK, but not that special. I'm probably going to go for The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison next. |

Just finished "The Golden One", by Elizabeth Peters, the 14th book in the "Amelia Peabody" series. This is a book of two halves (or rather, of two quarters, and a half

Another book finished: "Pyramid Scheme" by Dave Freer and Eric Flint, originally bought from Baen in 2001. Excellent SF of what I guess I'd call the "humorous military" variety.
An alien probe lands in the middle of Chicago and people in its immediate vicinity start vanishing. Any attempt to attack the probe simply makes it larger. A group of the people abducted by the probe find themselves in a world in which the Greek myths are true, and have to try to survive and attempt to get back home. Very, very good indeed. Highly recommended. |

Hmmm. I happen to have that in Calibre. I might just give it a try. It's no longer available from Baen, but the second in the series, Pyramid Power, is.

Unfortunately a lot of books that Baen have sold in the past are no longer available, presumably due to rights issues. |

Yes, at some point, rights revert back to the author. Though I'm having a hard time guessing why this one would become unavailable, given that both authors are still actively writing for Baen, I believe. I'm pretty sure I got my copy off a Baen CD. Which makes the unavailability even more perplexing (and a bit annoying if I like it, since I'd certainly have then bought it.)

Yes, it's still available at The Fifth Imperium on the "1635 The Eastern Front" CD. You have to download the whole CD (iso or zip file), as The Fifth Imperium is not allowed to link to individual books anymore. That's where I got my copy.

I just read Sarah Monette's mostly-fantasy short story collection Somewhere Beneath Those Waves, and adored it. Stylistically I thought it was pretty broad, from some pieces that jump around in vignettes in time to some straightforward urban fantasy. A lot of the stories feel like modern ghost stories.
Sarah Monette is also the author, as Katherine Addison, of The Goblin Emperor, nominated for the Hugo and Nebula and my favorite book of this year's reading so far. Go read that too if you somehow haven't encountered it already. |

I just finished with Alexandre Dumas' Marie Antoinette series (5 books, although The Knight of Maison Rouge is only sort-of related to the first 4 books). Words can't describe how much I enjoyed this series.
