What a terribly cynical article. Rather than "gee, isn't it good that Amazon didn't take the money?", it's "Amazon must have some sinister reason for not taking it".

Hey, it's Amazon. There's always a nefarious reason. It couldn't possibly be that Amazon only expects to be in the area for a couple years and didn't want to make the long-term commitment a deal typically requires. Or it could be they know the politicians in question are too sleazy to associate with; FIFA involvement or something like that... |

However, if they only plan "to be in the area for a couple years," expecting layoffs from the get-go, that's nefarious. Here's a third possibility: They expect to stay around many years but quickly replace people with robots. (Further automation, ideally introduced in a gradual way avoiding layoffs, is inevitable.) Yup. It's an Amazon story, alright. Refusing to take money you may or not earn is nefarious. Hiring 1000 people for (maybe) a few years is nefarious. I'm outta here. |

Participating in an economy while preparing for a window of profitability that will not be continuous is "nefarious". Math is racist, profit is sexist, evil economic analysis, Yada Yada yada.

How can you not stick around this thread to learn about these Amazon robots? I mean, it could be "The Stepford Bookstore" or perhaps a Yul Brenneresque "Library World. " You don't wanna miss out on this thread. I guess you could wait for the movie, but the thread is better. Or something.

I suspect that Amazon had a look inside the wooden gift horse before they opened the gates and dragged it inside.

The article does seem to close on a cynical note. However, one of the central premises that these sort of tax break incentives are seldom a good deal for the community, is correct. I don't know what went into Amazon's decision in this example—I suspect that it was a hard-nosed business choice not altruism—but I suspect that the city will be better off for it. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. Amazon made a choice and it might be for hard nosed business reasons or out of a sense of decency, or both. The only thing we know about it is that we don't know the reason. I've never thought of hard nosed business as nefarious. A businessman represents his investors and stockholders first, by law. Not doing that is nefarious. Doing it is his job. I didn't see the article as cynical. Sure he questions Amazon's motives but he doesn't make assumptions about what they are. He wonders. And either way, he approves. Barry |

I would so go to see that movie. Quote:
You can legally and faithfully act in the best interest of the corporate entity and the stockholders and at the same time NOT screw over employees, customers and the community. Just a general comment, not saying Amazon is acting one way or the other.
