The light was "off"; it was pitch dark and no light was being emitted (when i turned on the lamp, the slider was at 0 (off.). Also, swiping only works when you are reading?

Some times my finger covers the light, and I usually don't hold the reader at an angle where the light is visible. If I have to look at the light to determine if it is going into/out of sleep, that is a fail. YMMV.

Maybe, but I thought there were transmitters/receivers on both sides. And the touch/Glo/H2O/Aura HD don't need the shiney bezel?

The H2O has the shiny inner bezel, same as the Glo HD. To be honest, I've had it ever since it came out last year and I don't even notice it's there. Nor have I read complaints about it here before the Glo HD came out.

Have to come back on my first opinion about this, reading in direct sunlight makes you crazy, especially the one at the bottom bezel, that really works like a sunlight mirror.
I adjust the position of the device all the time to avoid it.. lucky we have only 30 days of sun so bright as today but it really is a bummer !!

Why does my Kobo Glo HD drain battery so quickly during standby?
This morning I remember the battery was well over 90%. Then after standing by for about 10 hours it went to 67%. I wonder why. I am using Koreader. I pressed the button at the top to put it into sleep mode.

Good point.. (swipe for light works only while reading) but when you somehow manage to put the slider back to 0 and go back to the main menu then you would have a problem with a phisical switch to.
The device remembers where the slider position is,so when u press the phisical light button while the slider is been set to 0 there is no light.
Ok.. tried it with my wifes normal glo, the lowest setting is 1 and that gives some light, but set the Glo HD to 1 and it is still pitch dark.. so a phisical light button would have done nothing... it would only work when pressing of and on again and then returns to 40 or something
But maybe that is an idea for a patch (if possible) when turning the reader on and off, the light must come back to a level where it provides some light ?

Power usage as an issue seems to come and go, with it seldom getting nailed down to a single correctable factor. Going by the built in percentage monitoring routines has not been too reliable. Also, it takes a number of recharge cycles for a new device to become consistent with its power management.

That said; for some people with some devices, replacing the "suspend.sh" in /.adds/koreader/ with the "suspend.sh" from /.adds/valasovsoft/, has improved their power consumption issues. This may be an example of where Sergey got one better, than the Koreader team.

Luck;
Ken

The shiny inner bezel on the H20 bothers me a lot. Reflections are constantly eliminated by adjusting the angle of the book. This applies to sunlight and indoor overhead and side lights.
I did not complain because it appeared that it was done on purpose by Kobo for some technical reason. I thought that no one could miss the reflection issue with the H20 and it must have been a trade off decision by Kobo. I guess I was wrong in thinking that everyone would have an issue with this at some point.

Well, I'm afraid my willpower crumbled within 24 hours of the GloHD becoming available in the UK. (I really didn't need another reader, but what can you do?)

I just thought I'd make a quick post to let other potential UK buyers know that my experience of ordering online from the WHSmith website was very positive. Ordered Tuesday afternoon - free delivery to my door within 48 hours - I didn't need to sign for it. No device defects as far as I can see. In fact, nothing to whinge about at all. I hope this isn't tempting fate

Bit different from my experience with WH Smith, although I did order for collect at store.

Ordered on 29th (in stock), on the off chance rang up local store on 1st , had them in stock so went in and bought one.

Then got email that my first one was ready for collection on the 3rd, which I have now got to go in and "collect" it in order to "return" it. Can't just tell them I don't want it. Go figure.

Serves me right for being so impatient

As regards the Glo HD, it's so much better than my original Touch I have had for a few years. I don't notice the bezel so much, and wouldn't have thought about it all had I not read about it on here.

I'm with you about this, I absolutely hate that shiny piece and can't understand why they would put a high-gloss piece on an otherwise perfectly matte reader. I find I'm also constantly tilting the reader to get rid of the shiny spots while reading. Maybe it just affects people with eyes more sensitive to light (which I definitely have). I was going to order a spare Glo HD while the Visa Checkout 20% off was going on but that shiny piece is what stopped me.

I saw one today in my local WHSmith, and very nice it looked to. I need to go back with my Voyage and do a comparison. I'm really not interested in another reader but it did look very good.

I do exactly the same, although I did ordered the second, the shiny part only bothers me while reading in full sunlight.
In time, I go two weeks on vacation in which I don't lay on the bed at the beach all time.
Of all the days I have to work, and have vacation it will be (if I could sit every day in the sun) 6 weeks in total, maybe in 3 I can read in the sun, leaves me 48 till 49 weeks I can read unbothered, I can live with it,but it is annoying.

Sounds a bit risky ... put your credit card away and step away from the demo unit ... repeat, step away ...

I've never noticed the shiny part on my H2O, but I pretty much never read in direct sunlight (that's some skin-cancer causing stuff right there[1]). And with the frontlight, I don't need to train a lamp on the screen - I just read in dim to medium indoor ambient light.

Well, I received a notice from customs that my Glo HD arrived! IN under 2 weeks to Greece, that is the good news. I did get charged the 23% intl VAT, which I am not surprised about. But I also got hit with an additional 15 euros charge for something else, not sure what. So that's an extra 43%!

In fairness, the final price is about what one would pay in a store, and without the Kobo cover that I purchased. And they don't even sell them in Greece, so I am not too terribly unhappy. Just not a bargain.

It is at the P.O. in my town, which is convenient, and I can get it on Monday (when husband is at work :-). Hope it had a safe trip here!
