Don't know how tech/business savvy your local media companies are but on this side of the pond the "big boys" have apparently come to the (proper) conclusion that their dependence on cable is costing them money and that they need to put some distance between them and the wiring guys.

- ABC and CBS moving to stream their broadcast content online
- TimeWarner getting out of the cable business.
- HBO NOW: last year at this time, HBO publicly stated they weren't concerned about video piracy of GAME OF THRONES. At that exact time, they were already developing HBO NOW. Showtime is right behind them.
- Dish's SLING TV, Sony's PlayStation network, Apple's rumored TV service, Microsoft's rumored XBL Diamond, and eventually Google's inevitable entry...
- Crunchyroll

I haven't been paying too much attention to Digital media this decade but I've recently been getting back into it and what I'm finding *should* have the mass media companies scrambling. Video piracy hasn't reached the mainstream, like Napster did, but it is getting very close...

Popcorn hour has gotten some tech media attention but there are dozens of far worse systems emerging. If the networks don't start offering convenient legal access to their content, and soon, they'll soon end up competing against free "rebroadcasters".

The Japanese anime producers are probably the leaders here, with their partnership with Crunchyroll. They realized there was money to be made worldwide at minimal cost to them.

Cable is, like pbooks, a business model just begging to be disrupted.

Look through your Windows update history for KB3035583 and uninstall that update. That should get rid of the icon.

You obviously haven't seen all the Linux hype in this thread.

Like a few others have posted, if I upgrade to Windows 10, I'll definitely want a backup installation disk just in case of having to reformat. If it's not going to be possible to download the image and burn it to a disk, then I'm going to stick with Windows 7 and not take the free upgrade.

Microsoft has stated it will be possible to do a clean/fresh install during the initial upgrade to 10 and for any subsequent reinstalls so there will be no need to reinstall 7/8 then upgrade to 10 in the future.

Microsoft provides for free downloads of backup copies of most (if not all?) their applications on their web site for burning to disc as long as one has a key. It would seem unusual if they were to discontinue this practice or not provide an alternative methodology (in the good old days they even used to offer to send you a copy on disc free in the mail).

I won't get the free update to Windows 10 when it is first released. New Windows often have problems that cannot be fixed yet and are not found when Microsoft was developing it. If you choose to upgrade so soon, you become a guinea pig and need to help Microsoft to find the problems. I may upgrade before the 1 year period ends if at that time Windows 10 are satisfactory.

I wonder what they will charge for upgrades that are not free, e.g. from Vista/XP or from Home to Pro. And is win7/32 to win10/64 free, or not? And if you are buying Windows 10 outright (for Bootcamp or to run in a VM etc.) what will they charge.

They have already quit, afaik, since February 15, 2015.

If not, do you have any links?

Non-free licenses will be the same as Win8/8.1: $119 for Home and $199 for pro.

I may upgrade some of my windows boxes, but I can't upgrade my windows media center because they broke the ability to use 3rd party extenders, my systems have network issues with xbox 360, and they chose not to make a WMC extender app for the xbox 1.

Oh, there is an internet component. But you can't record those and those are limited to Dutch channels (and not the international ones such as Discovery, BBC, National Geographic). And you must have an android device. Or some fruit. And we run Windows, have several windows tablets and windows phones. And we watch and record every channel we want. With Windows 8.1 and Media Center
