A Witness Above is the first in the Frank Pavlicek series by Andy Straka. It was a finalist for a bunch of awards when it came out in 2001. It's on US Kindle Countdown at $0.99 for about 2 1/2 more days before going up to $4.99.

Quote:
What’s the PI series that Edgar winners Michael Connelly, Jeffery Deaver, Steve Hamilton, and Rick Riordan read when they want the best?

This one.

Thirteen years ago, NYPD Detective, Frank Pavlicek quit the force after a controversial shoot-out that left an unarmed African-American teenager dead. The divorced father of a teenage daughter, Pavlicek now works as a private investigator and hunts with a trained falcon. While hunting, he discovers the corpse of a black, teenage drug dealer with ties to his daughter. Unable to ignore the connections to his family or the shooting that cost his career, he goes after the killer to find the truth, save his daughter …and free himself from the shackles of his past.

The first novel in the blockbuster Frank Pavlicek series. An Anthony, Shamus, and Agatha Award nominee.

"Pavlicek is a breath of fresh air in the field of private eye fiction." Jeffery Deaver

"Highly recommended. I dare you to tell me I’m wrong," Michael Connelly

"A book this good, and this original, helps remind me why started reading mysteries in the fist place," Steve Hamilton

"Storytelling as sharp and strong as talons," Rick Riordan

The price is 2.39 pounds from where I sit, which is - unfortunately - a lot more than $2.99 dollars.

For $2.99, Amazon has this boxed set:

Can anyone recommend any of these authors? I have to admit that, dedicated thriller reader though I am, I haven't previously come across any of them.

I've read romances by some of them--they all seem like competent authors but romance is not my genre. Not sure how they handle suspense, though.

I'm familiar with a couple of them, but I don't like their work because it's a bit darker than I prefer and I've yet to be drawn in by the characters. Novak is more romance, but a couple of the others are known for being thriller writers. They may be bigger names in the circles I follow (which are mostly cozy, but many of the ladies will branch out). I've certainly heard of Neggers and Brennan (I had two of hers on my shelf until the last trip to GW. I think they both went). They tend to be women in danger/stalkers/serial killer type stuff from what I've perused. Really not my thing because oddly enough I tend to like tough guy thrillers better.

Death Mask
by J F Straker

When private detective Johnny Inch is invited to a fancy-dress party at Abstock Hall he looks forward to an evening of good food, fine wine and harmless flirtations.
But play soon turns into work as the night takes a sinister turn.
Witnessing a violent car bomb explosion Johnny is flung headlong into a dangerous murder investigation.
Employed by the lady of the manor and sporting two badly burned legs and a face to match, all Johnny has to go on is a threatening letter mysteriously signed by `The Goat'.

J. F. Straker was the author of twenty-five novels including `Murder of Miss Emily' and `Death on a Sunday Morning'.

This month's Kindle First includes two thriller titles. (Kindle First allows Amazon Prime members to pick one book for free each month, out of a selection of four.)

A Dark Lure by Loreth Anne White [Genre: Psychological Thriller]
Quote:
Twelve years ago, Sarah Baker was abducted by the Watt Lake Killer and sexually assaulted for months before managing to escape. The killer was caught, but Sarah lost everything: her marriage, her child, and the life she loved.

Struggling with PTSD, Sarah changes her name to Olivia West and finds sanctuary working on Broken Bar Ranch. But as her scars finally begin to heal, a cop involved with her horrific case remains convinced the Watt Lake Killer is still out there. He sets a lure for the murderer, and a fresh body is discovered. Now Olivia must face the impossible—could the butcher be back, this time to finish the job?

As a frigid winter isolates the ranch, only one person can help Olivia: Cole McDonough, a writer, adventurer, and ranch heir who stirs long-dormant feelings in her. But this time, Olivia’s determination to shut out her past may destroy more than her chance at love. It could cost her her life.

Bum Rap by Paul Levine [Genre: Legal Thriller]
Quote:
NFL linebacker-turned-lawyer Jake Lassiter has had it with shifty clients, dirty prosecutors, and a legal system out of whack. It’s enough to make a man want to leave Miami and never look back—until he gets a call from Victoria Lord, the better half of hot local legal team Solomon & Lord. Her partner in life and law has been arrested for murder. What’s worse: the only person who can clear him has fled the city. Now it’s up to Jake and Victoria to track down the witness—a stunning “Bar girl”—before she’s roped in by the feds…or eliminated by the Russian mob.

Jake knows that if he doesn’t get to the witness first, his client’s case is lost. Luckily, he’s got some good advice from his college football coach: “Buckle your chin strap and hit somebody.” And sometimes, the only way to win a tough case is to do just that.

Hmmm. Don't know what's up, but connecting to the Canadian site from my place in the US shows the price as $2.99 (I would have thought CAD).

Logging in to the American Kobo I get the same collection for $2.99.

Maybe the rollout was quirky? After all, it is Kobo.

A Man Who Cannot Kill by J F Straker

When some children find a dead woman in the park, it is up to Detective Collier to find the killer.
Meanwhile, Harry Hyde, an ineffectual ex-schoolmaster, is approached by a private investigator, Peppard before quickly disappearing...
Hyde is conned into obtaining compromising photographs for divorce evidence for his ex-employer, Mrs Ould, whose son he tutored.
But quickly Hyde is plunged into a nightmare he could not have forseen: he was the last man to be seen with Collier's victim, having met her frequently in the days before she was killed.
He is arrested and eventually charged with not one, but two murders, when Mr Ould is also discovered dead.
Hyde manages to escape from the police when their car crashes, but the nightmare closes in upon him with ever-increasing horror when he is tracked down by the dead woman's brother...
Managing to escape again, Hyde turns to an old friend for help as the police continue to search for him.
If Hyde didn't kill either victim, who did?

Can he find the real culprit before the police find him?

J. F. Straker was the author of twenty-five novels, including `Death on a Sunday Morning' and `A Choice of Victims'.

The Shadow Spy by Nicholas Luard

After a series of business failures and a disgraced career Steele, a retired British officer, is forced back into the service by a blackmail scheme that has overshadowed his entire life.
His choice is simple: impersonate the glamorous playboy Ross Callum - the most flamboyant agent provocateur ever to operate out of the sinister city of Tangier - or spend the rest of his life in a military prison.
As Steele works his way into his his new character he learns of the deadly assassin whose only aim is to murder Ross Callum.
Steele's mission is to draw this incensed man into the open.

Nicholas Luard was a writer and politician, but is perhaps best known for his activities in the early 1960s: co-founding The Establishment with Peter Cook and being one of the Lords Gnome of Private Eye.
He is also the author of `The Warm and Golden War' and `The Robespierre Serial',

I'm not familiar with Loreth Anne White, but I can heartily recommend that the Paul Levine book, Bum Rap, is worth trying. I've enjoyed many of his books, recommended him here on occasions. Levine has been nominated for a bunch of awards in the field for his previously published books, and won a John D. McDonald award, so he's perhaps a little more of a 'known factor' than most Kindle First options.
