They check to see if it is a problem with the internal connections/hardware, vs something that looks like it happened when the device was dropped etc.

The question was retorical.

Maybe a material defect can make some part weaker then it was supposed and break in normal use. If the defect were not preset the normal use would not break just misuse.

When checking the device already broken it's hard to know if it's misuse related or caused by a material weakness...

Screen Problem -Why your Kobo may fail within the year

I bought a Kobo Aura HD in June 2014 which failed in early 2015. Nothing I could do would fix it even with tech support which was very quick and sent over the weekend (I was impressed with that). Tech asked for images of the device and told me it was damaged rather than failed due to manufacturer error. I have been pretty careful with it so was surprised that they said it wasn't covered under warranty. Apparently if the screen looks like it is cracked rether than just lines, it is a big problem.
I decided to take it apart to find out the cause.

As you can see the glass screen is broken

What I was amazed with was the completely fragile nature of this screen and when you look at the thickness you will realise why
I put a piece of the screen on a credit card.[Image violates posting guidelines - MODERATOR]
Just look at how thin it is

Warning Frgile
It seems that the kobo screen is thin, fragile, and not at all robust.
I would strongly recommend looking at other manufactuers.
I did not get a refund
very poor in my opinion

All ereader substrates are extremely fragile and thin. What seem like inconsequential bumps can break the screen. This is a downside of eink screen technology unless you can find an ereader that uses a screen with a flexible substrate, like the E Ink Mobius screen. These are very rare to find in ereaders.

I'll 2nd this comment. VIRTUALLY ALL manufacturers are using this same e-ink tech and it all has the thin substrate. IMHO flexing/bending of the device is the big killer of screens (even ones people keep in cases).
Sorry about your luck with your screen, but this is not specifically a Kobo failing.

Kobo, Kindle, BN, Sony, Onyx Books, Bookeen, and others all use the same screen technology that have a glass substrate. Kobo is no more fragile than any of the others.
