Two DRM-free ebooks from Tor (US) discounted from $7.99 to $2.99 at all retailers:

Gene Wolfe, Pirate Freedom (seems to be discounted everywhere.)
Robert Charles Wilson, A Bridge of Years (discounted in Canada/US only I think.)

I thought these would appear on Macmillan's eDeals page, but are not there yet.

I had never heard of him before, but I probably would have enjoyed it back as a kid. Sounds like more fun than the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew.

Back on topic, Jason Werbeloff's new short story, The Photons in the Cheese are Lost is available free on Amazon. He's self-published, but I've read the story and enjoyed it a lot. It made me laugh quite a bit.

This month's Kindle First includes an Urban Fantasy book. (Kindle First allows Amazon Prime members to pick one book for free each month, out of a selection of four.)

Darkness Brutal (The Dark Cycle Book 1) by Rachel A. Marks [Genre: Urban Fantasy]
Quote:
Aidan O’Linn’s childhood ended the night he saw a demon kill his mother and mark his sister, Ava, with Darkness. Since then, every three years the demons have returned to try to claim her. Living in the gritty, forgotten corners of Los Angeles, Aidan has managed to protect his sister, but he knows that even his powers to fight demons and speak dead languages won’t keep her safe for much longer.

In desperation, Aidan seeks out the help of Sid, the enigmatic leader of a group of teens who run LA Paranormal, an Internet reality show that fights demons and ghosts. In their company, Aidan believes he’s finally found a haven for Ava. But when he meets Kara, a broken girl who can spin a hypnotic web of passionate energy, he awakens powers he didn’t know he had―and unleashes a new era of war between the forces of Light and the forces of Darkness.

With the fate of humanity in his hands, can Aidan keep the Darkness at bay and accept his brilliant, terrifying destiny?

Beggars in Spain: The Original Hugo & Nebula Winning Novella
by Nancy Kress

Quote:
Nancy Kress’ original novella “Beggars in Spain” won both the Hugo and Nebula, became an iconic work of science fiction dealing with genetics and established Nancy as a major writer in the genre. The novella was subsequently turned into a novel which then spurred a number of sequels set in the same universe.

From the back cover of “Beggars in Spain:”

“Leisha Camden is a genetically engineered "Sleepless." Her ability to stay awake all the time has not only made her more productive, but the genetic modifications have also given the "Sleepless" a higher IQ and may even make them immortal. Are they the future of humanity? Or will the small community of "sleepless" be hunted down as freaks by a world that has grown wary of its newest creation?”

This is a truly excellent story which I highly recommend (disclaimer: Kress has long since been one of my two favourite authors for social consequences of genetic engineering sf; the other is Brian Stableford, who is also excellent at that).

And there's a really good tie-in deal for all of Kress' Phoenix Pick reprints (2 extra novellas, 2 novels, and 3 mini story collections for $14.99), which I'd recommend snapping up if you've any interest in social consequences of genetic engineering stuff. I already own most of it in e-editions from previous PPP promos (and the remaining ones in hardcover).

But I'm splurging again to get the two "Robert Cavanaugh" technothriller novels in e-book (and because apparently the final chapter got left out of the original hardcover printing of one of the novels), even if they're going to be a little pricey without what would otherwise be extra amortization from the stuff I already paid for during the last few rounds.

On sale for $1.99 (Reg. $9.99) @ Amazon US:

Lovecraft's Monsters - Ellen Datlow (Editor), Neil Gaiman, etc.

Quote:
Book Description
Publication Date: March 24, 2014
Prepare to meet the wicked progeny of the master of modern horror. In Lovecraft's Monsters, H. P. Lovecraft's most famous creations—Cthulhu, Shoggoths, Deep Ones, Elder Things, Yog-Sothoth, and more—appear in all their terrifying glory. Each story is a gripping new take on a classic Lovecraftian creature, and each is accompanied by a spectacular original illustration that captures the monsters' unique visage.

Contributors include such literary luminaries as Neil Gaiman, Joe R. Lansdale, Caitlín R. Kiernan, Karl Edward Wagner, Elizabeth Bear, and Nick Mamatas. The monsters are lovingly rendered in spectacular original art by World Fantasy Award–winning artist John Coulthart (The Steampunk Bible).

Legions of Lovecraft fans continue to visit his bizarre landscapes and encounter his unrelenting monsters. Now join them in their journey...if you dare.

This is the second novel in the Craft Sequence. I have read the first book, Three Parts Dead, and really liked it. I don't think you have to have read that one in order to get into this one, since it's set earlier, and involves different places and characters.
In this setting, magic, and gods' power, is governed by arcane laws and contracts. Magic users are basically lawyer necromancers (or is it necromancer lawyers?), who know how to navigate all that bureaucracy and exploit loopholes.

Quote:
In Two Serpents Rise by Max Gladstone, shadow demons plague the city reservoir, and Red King Consolidated has sent in Caleb Altemoc–casual gambler and professional risk manager–to cleanse the water for the sixteen million people of Dresediel Lex. At the scene of the crime, Caleb finds an alluring and clever cliff runner, Crazy Mal, who easily outpaces him.

But Caleb has more than the demon infestation, Mal, or job security to worry about when he discovers that his father–the last priest of the old gods and leader of the True Quechal terrorists–has broken into his home and is wanted in connection to the attacks on the water supply.

From the beginning, Caleb and Mal are bound by lust, Craft, and chance, as both play a dangerous game where gods and people are pawns. They sleep on water, they dance in fire…and all the while the Twin Serpents slumbering beneath the earth are stirring, and they are hungry.
