Prospero’s Son: Life, Books, Love, and Theater
by Seth Lerer

Quote:
"This book is the record of a struggle between two temperaments, two consciousnesses and almost two epochs." That's how Edmund Gosse opened "Father and Son", the classic 1907 book about his relationship with his father. Seth Lerer's "Prospero's Son" is, as fits our latter days, altogether more complicated, layered, and multivalent, but at its heart is that same problem: the fraught relationship between fathers and sons. At the same time, Lerer's memoir is about the power of books and theater, the excitement of stories in a young man's life, and the transformative magic of words and performance. A flamboyantly performative father, a teacher and lifelong actor, comes to terms with his life as a gay man. A bookish boy becomes a professor of literature and an acclaimed expert on the very children's books that set him on his path in the first place. And when that boy grows up, he learns how hard it is to be a father and how much books can, and cannot, instruct him. Throughout these intertwined accounts of changing selves, Lerer returns again and again to stories - the ways they teach us about discovery, deliverance, forgetting, and remembering. "A child is a man in small letter," wrote Bishop John Earle in the seventeenth century. "His father hath writ him as his own little story." With "Prospero's Son", Seth Lerer acknowledges the author of his story while simultaneously reminding us that we all confront the blank page of life on our own, as authors of our lives.

Just beat me to posting it! (need to be faster looking up stuff and typing the write-ups, I guess)

I should note that this is an LGBT interest memoir (it's in part about how his views were shaped by his posthumous rediscovery of his closeted gay father) by an award-winning literature critic and Old/Middle English-language scholar Seth Lerer (Wikipedia), currently Distinguished Professor of Literature and former Dean of Arts and Humanities at UCSD, here's some interviews with the author about it over at KPBS and the University of California's TV website, if you're interested.

And it's an ePub instead of a PDF.

Book on Raising a "Spirited" ("Difficult," "Strong-Willed") Child--Marked Down 92%!

92% from the regular digital price--now only 99 cents!

This is the Revised Edition.

It has a secular/non-religious approach (I think).

Raising Your Spirited Child. By Mary Sheedy Kurcinka. Rated 4.6 stars, from 191 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $16.99; regular(?) digital price $12.59; Kindle price now $0.99. William Morrow Paperbacks, publisher. 498 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Raising-Your-S...N%3DB001TJ2YBY.

Book Description
Newly revised, featuring the most up-to-date research, effective strategies, and real-life stories

The spirited child—often called "difficult" or "strong-willed"—possesses traits we value in adults yet find challenging in children. Research shows that spirited kids are wired to be "more"—by temperament, they are more intense, sensitive, perceptive, persistent, and uncomfortable with change than the average child. In this revised edition of the award-winning classic, voted one of the top twenty books for parents, Kurcinka provides vivid examples and a refreshingly positive viewpoint. Raising Your Spirited Child will help you:

- understand your child's*—and your own—temperamental traits
- discover the power of positive—rather than negative—labels
- cope with the tantrums and power struggles when they do occur
- plan for success with a simple four-step program
- develop strategies for handling mealtimes, sibling rivalry, bedtimes, holidays, and school, among other situations

Cromwell: Portrait of a Soldier by John Gillingham

Oliver Cromwell was a man of outstanding gifts and forceful intellect, he saw more keenly than any other Civil War general the need for a new kind of warfare.
He saw that the rules of seventeenth-century warfare, as practised on the continent, were inappropriate to conditions in England and, with a politician's eye, he saw the importance of bringing the war to a swift conclusion.
Decisive in seeking battle and ruthless in pursuit, Cromwell's aggressive, Napoleonic style of warfare quickly established his reputation as a military commander of genius.
The early years of the Civil War witnessed not only his military apprenticeship - for unlike most of his colleagues and opponents he had no experience of war - but also the forging of the instrument with which the Civil War was won.
The cavalry regiments of the Eastern Association and the New Model Army were largely Cromwell's work. With these hand-picked, well trained and disciplined troops Cromwell was possessed of an advantage denied to otherwise skilled commanders like Waller.

John Gillingham is Emeritus Professor of Medieval History at LSE. His other titles include `The Wars of the Roses'.

Anyone Going to Machu Picchu? I've Got a Great Guide for U for $1.00 (92% Markdown!).

And that's a 92% markdown from the digital list price.

Possibly there is no one monitoring this thread who is planning to go anytime soon. But, after reading this colorful guidebook, who knows? Maybe that'll be just the thing to make you decide on making a trip there! I love reading guidebooks like this, though, even if I know that I'm not going to make a trip to the place.

This is the second edition, November 26, 2013.

Moon Machu Picchu: Including Cusco & the Inca Trail (Moon Handbooks). By Ben Westwood. Rated 4.3 stars, but from only 7 reviews, at Amazon at the present moment; rated 3.2, but from only 5 ratings, at GoodReads. Print list price $17.99; digital list price $11.99; Kindle price now $1.00. Avalon Travel Publishing, publisher. 240 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Moon-Machu-Pic...n+Handbooks%29.

Book Description
This full-color guide to Machu Picchu includes vibrant photos and helpful planning maps.

Dawn reveals ancient stonework backed by the towering Andes—the fusion of natural and manmade beauty, built in perfect harmony with the earth and skies. This is Machu Picchu, center of the lost Inca empire. And it’s yours to explore.

This is the trip of a lifetime. It will leave you with a new sense of wonder—and some great stories to share. In this book, expert traveler Ben Westwood tells you everything you need to know to make this trip possible:

How to choose guides, tours, and means of transportation

How to plan a trek in the Andes—including deciding which of the Inca trails is right for you

How to get there, how long it will take, and where to stop along the way—including information on Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and stopping over in Lima.

Sounds excellent, but not discounted at Amazon UK, unfortunately.

About 30 freebies from Chios Classics. Looks like they are fairly evenly split between various fiction and nonfiction. Some of them are repeats. The link to their books, sorted low to high price: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_st_pr...asc-rank&ajr=1.

The most interesting seems to be

A Budget of Paradoxes by Augustus De Morgan

An important figure in mathematical logic and abstract algebra, Augustus De Morgan (1806–71) also wrote wittily on paradoxical and illogical thinking through time. Edited by his widow and published in 1872, this entertaining work parades all varieties of crackpot, from circle-squarers to inventors of perpetual motion machines.

HarperCollins has a short stack of nonfiction titles on sale for $.99. The linked promotional page has links to the HarperCollins online store for each book, but I spot-checked Barnes & Noble and they're $.99 there as well. I assume that Amazon has followed suit.

Hmmmm . . . Now I count 10, 2 are new since I posted. A Budget of Paradoxes hasn't shown up free at all for me--it's $0.99 (highway robbery, I tell you! I won't pay it! hahahahahah). But, thanks for your post--I did add the 2 new ones to my library.

I guess that I just should say YMMV (your mileage may vary).

I'm curious how they manage to stack digital books. hahahah

It's hard to rid ourselves of some of the terminology and other things that we learned in the dead-tree book days growing up . . . .
