Just finished "The Lark and the Wren" by Mercedes Lackey, which I bought from Baen in August 2001. A lightweight but enjoyable fantasy about a peasant girl's attempts to fulfil her dream of becoming a bard. Like all (that I've read, at least) of Lackey's work, it involves no great mental effort to read, but it's a pleasant enough way to fill a few hours. Recommended.

Well, 15% in and I'm giving up. Not as 'bad' as the Henry James, but just not for me.

Next up: Analog SF/F for July/August 2015.

I finished reading The Ace Of Skulls last evening. Sadly, this book was the last of the series, a series that I thoroughly enjoyed.

All good things come to an end. And this is it: the last stand of the Ketty Jay and her intrepid crew. The Ace of Skulls is the last in the Tales Of The Ketty Jay series. It’s been quite a ride with the guys and girls of the Ketty Jay. I’m sad to wave them off. But I’ll have fond memories of them – as, I hope, will the readers that followed the series – and that, to me, is what counts.

Now on to

Don't Dare a Dame (Maggie Sullivan Mystery #3) by M. Ruth Myers. I was worried that this book was also the last of its series as is The Ace Of Skulls, but it is not, as there is a book #4 to be released this Fall

I've been dividing my time between the Kate Daniels series and the Edge series, both by the awesome author-duo Ilona Andrews. This husband and wife write very well together; I am definitely a fan!

I like both series, but I had a hard time getting into the third Edge book: Fate's Edge, and had to set it aside. I'm not sure if I'll pick it up again right after the book I'm reading now, or a few more books down the road. Either way, with only Fate's Edge and a 4th, final, book left to read, I plan to finish the entire Edge series this summer.

I'm currently reading the third book in the Kate Daniels series, Magic Strikes, and I am thoroughly enjoying it! This series is steadily making its way up my "Favorites" list. Although its little gorier than I'm accustomed to reading, the series does so many things well, with unique takes on mythology and lore. I find myself liking Kate and her co-characters more and more with every book.

As a side note: My twins have been reading the Harry Potter series and I couldn't be happier sharing the experience with them. Twin A is still in the early stages, about 1/2 way through Prisoner of Azkaban (book 3). Twin B has been tearing through them and will most likely finish Deathly Hallows (and therefore the series as a whole) by the end of the weekend.
Twin B and I have also been watching the movies together; Goblet of Fire (book 4) is up next.

I read the first two Edge books, but got a serious case of déjà vu from the second one. Maybe it was me, but book two felt like just a retread of book one, which has left me thoroughly uninterested in continuing to books three and four.

OTOH, I quite enjoy the Kate Daniels series and need to get back to it. I'm a couple of books behind in that and a few other series.

Two books completed:

"The Ape Who Guards the Balance" by Elizabeth Peters. The 10th book in the Amelia Peabody series, and one of the best so far. Extremely enjoyable.

"The Honor of the Regiment" by Keith Laumer - the first volume in his collected "Bolo" stories, published by Baen. I bought this in 2001. In case anyone isn't familiar with the series, Bolos are the successors to today's tanks: gigantic war machines with sentient, self-aware AIs. They have a detailed knowledge of the totality of human military history, and often solve problems in surprising ways. Very good military SF.

This brings up the 50 books for the year mark for me, so I'm well on track to meet my goal of reading 100 books in the year.

The boy meets girl aspect was similar in books 1 & 2 of the Edge, but they were two different stories, IMO. Ilona Andrews really has a way with characters.

As for Kate, I finished Magic Strikes yesterday. I absolutely loved it.
I'm almost done reading the Curran POV short stories that take place during Magic Strikes and between books 3 and 4, then I'll read the bonus story Magic Mourns.

Finished Tudor: Passion. Manipulation. Murder. The Story of England's Most Notorious Royal Family by Leanda de Lisle. Very good; this is a current writing, which includes some details known from the Richard III dig in England.

Now reading Defiantly, She Advanced: Legends of Future Resistance, edited by George Donnelly. So far, so good.

Returned So Long a Letter to the library as I was heading to the airport on Wednesday. Read the last pages of Dead Man's Ransom on the flight back home yesterday evening.

Currently reading....

The Screwed Up Life of Charlie the Second by Drew Ferguson. I'm not sure I like it -- but then again, I've never been a teen-aged boy. I chose it to satisfy the "epistolary fiction" category in the Eclectic Reader Challenge.

Also from the library...

How could I ignore a book titled Notes from the Internet Apocalypse? Actually, the book that caught my attention was Agents of the Internet Apocalypse, but I discovered that it was the second book of a trilogy, so I asked my library to located a copy of the first book for me.
