Far Horizons: All-New Tales from the Greatest Worlds of Science Fiction is 99¢ at Amazon US and BN right now.

(The Publishers Weekly blurb is mangled at Amazon, so I didn't try to introduce my own errors into the text.)

Quote:
From Publishers Weekly
Silverberg (The Alien Years) now does for SF what his recent anthology Legends did for fantasy, collecting new tales by a number of the world's greatest SF writers set in the universes of their best-known series. Some entriesAsuch as Ursula K. Le Guin's "Old Music and the Slave Women," from her Ekumen series; Dan Simmons's "Orphans of the Helix," a further tale of the Hyperion Cantos; and Greg Bear's "The Way of All Ghosts," set in his Thistledown universeAstand more or less independent of what has preceded them. OthersAsuch as Joe Haldeman's "A Separate War," set in the future of The Forever War, or Orson Scott Card's "Investment Counselor," which relates an episode in the early life of Ender WigginAare essentially engaging footnotes, filling in worthwhile bits of information that never made it into previous novels. Still others, David Brin's "Temptation," for example, from his Uplift series, continue an author's on-going stories beyond the reach of the major works. Also included are a new tale by Nancy Kress, set in the world of the Sleepless; an interesting addition to Frederik Pohl's Tales of the Heechee; an early episode in Gregory Benford's Galactic Centers series; a new story by Silverberg himself, set in the alternate universe of Roma Eterna; and the first solo tale of the Ship Who Sang that Anne McCaffrey has written in years. All the stories are, at a minimum, very good, and several are outstanding. The Le Guin and Simmons contributions are particularly worthy of award consideration. This is an important anthology that should appeal to all serious readers of SF.

The Clockwork Rocket (Orthogonal Book 1) by Greg Egan

Quote:
In Yalda's universe, light has no universal speed and its creation generates energy. On Yalda's world, plants make food by emitting their own light into the dark night sky. As a child, Yalda witnesses one of a series of strange meteors, the Hurtlers, that are entering the planetary system at an immense, unprecedented speed. It becomes apparent that her world is in imminent danger — and the task of dealing with the Hurtlers will require knowledge and technology far beyond anything her civilization has yet achieved! Only one solution seems tenable: if a spacecraft can be sent on a journey at sufficiently high speed, its trip will last many generations for those on board, but it will return after just a few years have passed at home. The travelers will have a chance to discover the science their planet urgently needs, and bring it back in time to avert disaster.

I count 26 Tom Swift books currently free.

My dad loved these when he was a boy. He would frequently comment on them at the dinner table. But for whatever reason, they were out of print in the '50s when I was a boy.

It's a real shame the Tom Swift, Jr. books that came after those are all out of print but still in copyright. I managed to dig up most of them in print form a few years ago, but I had to rely on eBay to get the majority. I've never seen a single one show up in my local used book store, and it's a big one.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that would like to have them in e-book format!

The two that aren't under copyright are in print. None of the others are. Those two are available as ebooks for free also.

Fadedpage in Canada has two of the Tom Swift Sr. books now. Pgdpcanada is working on more of them.

I notice one of the 5 stories is the one I nominated some months back when the genre was Short Stories. Zen is a good story. A bit dated in its details but they didn't know a lot of things we know now in regard to the solar system.

Sabriel
by Garth Nix

is $1.99 at

Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000FC...ywords=sabriel

Kobo https://store.kobobooks.com/en-US/ebook/sabriel-1

Below is the blurb:
Game of Thrones fans will love the New York Times bestselling Abhorsen series. Sabriel, the first installment in the trilogy, launched critically acclaimed author Garth Nix onto the fantasy scene as a rising star.
Since childhood, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who refuse to stay dead. But now her father, the Abhorson, is missing, and Sabriel must cross into that world to find him. With Mogget, whose feline form hides a powerful, perhaps malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage, Sabriel travels deep into the Old Kingdom. There she confronts an evil that threatens much more than her life and comes face-to-face with her own hidden destiny. . . .

Midworld by Alan Dean Foster is $1.99.
Barnes & Noble
Amazon

Quote:
From the rich imagination of science fiction great Alan Dean Foster comes the story of Midworld, a Humanx Commonwealth planet that’s equally fragile and hostile. Covered by a lush rainforest, Midworld is home to a primitive society that lives in harmony with the natural world. But the arrival of an exploitative human company, whose workers know nothing of Midworld’s delicate ecosystem, sparks a conflict. Should Midworld’s villagers aid the humans or stand against them? The hero of Foster’s addictive page-turner, Born, decides to lead two humans across the perilous jungle. His choice propels Midworld toward annihilation—and leads him headlong into a battle for survival.

I share your fondness for Tom Swift Jr. I remember reading those in elementary school from the library. Every time I went there I hoped I would find another book in the series. It made into an SF fan.

Now if you remember James Bond Junior 003½, that is even more obscure!

The Adventures of James Bond Junior 003 1/2 by R.D. Mascott, 1968. About the nephew of 007. Have a copy of that still from when I was a kid. Possibly as or even more obscure would be the Christopher Cool TEEN Agent series by Jack Lancer from around the same time. The joys of growing up as a kid who loved spy stories.
