When Summer Fades by Danielle Shaw
Newly single after breaking off her engagement, Staff Nurse Sophie Fuller feels her life is going in the wrong direction. Called upon to help a friend, she reluctantly agrees to take care of youthful Portuguese prima donna, Rosa Ramirez, while she is studying in England. The two women could hardly be more different, and one nightmare weekend unwittingly becomes ten long months, with Rosa taking over Sophie's tiny council flat. However, despite their differences, the two form a (slightly reluctant) bond. Determined to introduce Sophie to a more exotic lifestyle, Rosa invites her to spend the summer at her family's beach house on the idyllic Algarve. Danielle Shaw is also the author of `Sunflower Morning', `Three Paths to Midnight' and `A Fabric of Dreams'. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00W3VC412/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00W3VC412/ http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00W3VC412/ |

As It Is On Telly by Jill Marshall
Bunty McKenna's very ordinary husband has had a vasectomy. Behind her back. Having found the invoice for said vasectomy, she starts to notice other things too. Like how much time her husband is spending at the gym. His new-found interest in clothes. And are his teeth looking whiter? In Bunty's mind, there can only be one explanation: he is having an affair. Naturally, the only solution is for Bunty to find a new husband before her old one leaves her. And so begins `Operation Sugar Daddy.' After a string of bad dates set up through the illustrious Croesus Club, Bunty finally meets Ben, a handsome yachtie from Auckland who is, most importantly, fabulously wealthy. Surely this is a match made in heaven? Hiding her own affair from her adulterous husband and sullen teenage daughter makes it all the more exciting, until suddenly Ben returns to Auckland with no explanation. To distract her from the disappearance of her future second-husband (not that he knew it yet) Bunty turns her mind to finding out exactly what her first husband is up to. When all evidence seems conclusive, and since Bunty's childhood best friend Cally also happens to live in Auckland, she decides to make a spontaneous visit to track down the illusive Ben. But when she arrives, all is not as it seems. Bunty has made a big mistake. But is it too late to reunite her family, or has she taken a step too far? Jill Marshall is the author of the best-selling Jane Blonde series for children, published in more than twenty countries and ten languages. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VGG02KA/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00VGG02KA/ http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00VGG02KA/ |

Am I the only one who is so sick of the assumption that all women spend most of their mental energies thinking about frickin' shoes?! Whenever I see anything in the description about shoes, I assume "chick lit" and move on to the next book.

I think in this book the heroine is a certain type of woman not your normal woman but the materialistic type so shoes, clothes, looks is super important to her.

![]() ![]() Only a little bit. I'm a lot more irritated, to the point of actual anger, at the far too popular trope/archetype of the insecure and timid woman who is nothing but a doormat in disguise, and who finds her secret inner strength through the love of a good man who teaches her how to stand up for herself. Yuck. |

i know lots of women in real life who spend a fortune and tons of attention on shoes and fill their closets with them, always on the lookout for more and always working on better ways to store them. to my surprise, my daughter grew up to be one such woman.
me, i'd rather have a new bass or camera than shoes, and i wear vegan athletic shoes or work boots ![]() Quote:
c'mon - cleaning / homemaking isn't a genetic predisposition. i have male friends who have beautiful living spaces that they care for themselves and i know women - myself included - who are FAR from suzie homemaker. Last edited by basschick; 05-27-2015 at 01:33 AM. |

I totally agree, I don't either like cleaning or homemaking. I like better being reading or software coding than with a broom. |

Well JE Plum series Stephanie is a slob and Ranger is a neat freak. I've read other books the same way. Most are first person written or miltary hero. I think authors like to make opposites of the h/h for a more interesting read.
As for shoes I own three pairs. I had my tennys for 8 years and last year got two pairs of flats for dress occasions. I'm flat footed so shoes don't excite me. Had I pretty feet I'd probably have more. My mom in her old age has turn into clothes addict. She has a walk in closet full of shiny, glittery bedazzled clothes. I just experience yesterday going shopping with her. ![]() ![]() |

Lately I've been obsessed with shoes because several of my favorite pairs bit the dust at once and I've had to shop for replacements, some on ebay because of course my faves are discontinued! Yesterday, I finally got a like-new pair of closed-toe Keen sandals that I loved and wore to pieces. Anyway, I don't mind clothing descriptions so much, it's the endless descriptions of interior decor that bore me. Maybe that's why I couldn't finish a Kristen Ashley book

Have you seen how many shoes Lisa Renee Jones hubby Diego has? I wouldn't worry about shoe obsession unless you have as many as he has. Just look on YouTube she posted a video. Now that's a shoe obsession.

I get most of my shoes at yard sales and thrift stores.
![]() I did get a new RED case for my Kobo Glo HD today, shipped from China. It's so nice! Waiting for a lightly used standing case in Blue for my Fire HD 6. Extra cases are a lot easier to store than extra shoes! |

Did anyone else get the super hero survey email from Samhain? Do you know if we have to actually sign up on the page at the end to get the code they promised?

I noticed, I took the survey too. It was actually entertaining to answer the questions... I hope someone gets some entertainment of their own out of my answers.
![]() Spoiler:
But thanks for verifying signing up wasn't required. I'll wait patiently for my coupon code and try to resist the lure of the wish list... ![]() ETA: I found the code! Stupid Outlook sent it to the junk folder! ![]() |
