Good morning, everyone! It's a bright and beautiful Tuesday, Bob turned 74 just the other day, having a lifetime of writing magnificent poetry. In fact, I'd say he was just as influential in the music scene as the Beatles were, changing the views and ideas of people all over the world. So this morning I'll raise my mug of Ahmad's "English Breakfast" tea to you, Bob. I knew you back in the day on the streets of Greenwich Village, and would never have suspected that you would turn out the way you did!

Tonic water with a squirt of over the counter flavorer. I've been assigned the quinine in tonic water, for leg cramps. We'll see if it helps. It tastes good, anyway!

You may want to get a second opinion. The FDA decided that risks from quinine outweigh the potential benefit for muscle cramps. That said, I love tonic and drink a lot of it even without the cramps, so I'm not sure what the FDA would have to say to me.

Right now, though, it's some Twinings decaffeinated Earl Grey. Not the best, but it's better than even some caffeinated teas that I consider drinkable.

Well, it's only 8 ounces a day of tonic water, not a prescription level of quinine. The cramps are daytime, not night time (though there are some of those too). I'm already taking potassium; have been for 20 years. The quinine does affect my Coumadin, so if that gets too hard to manage, I may not stay with the tonic water regime. We'll see.

I only mentioned it because a while ago, I was trying old tonic and bitters recipes that I was digging out of Google Books and I made sure to look up the toxicity of everything I tried. Quinine isn't very toxic normally, but I specifically remembered the thing about off-label prescriptions for cramps and the FDA.

It is amazing to me how many ingredients that are genuinely toxic can still be ordered from the Internet, often from "health food" stores and the like.

I've started taking Potassium. I just can't eat enough bananas. And I doubled up my calcium. It's tricky -- I've always had a tendency to foot cramps, primarily, though nasty leg cramps sometimes. But the diuretic for my blood pressure makes it all worse. Sigh.

First mug of this year's Anniversary Breakfast Blend. Definitely different this year (after two years in a row where it was essentially the same or very, very close). Duskier, but with an almost citrus note in the nose and front of the palette. Not as bright as last year's, a bit more rounded. Nice. Only time will tell, but I'm certainly enjoying this first taste.
