He was also one of the most remarkable double agents Britain has ever produced. Inside the traitor was a man of loyalty; inside the villain was a hero. The problem for Chapman, his spymasters, and his lovers was to know where one persona ended and the other began. Based on recently declassified files, Agent Zigzag tells Chapman’s full story for the first time. It’s a gripping tale of loyalty, love, treachery, espionage, and the thin and shifting line between fidelity and betrayal. |

Miscellaneous Automotive Ebooks--Only $5 Each Today!
I know that this will be of interest to only a few Mobilereaders, but if only one person benefits I feel that it is worthwhile to post it.
Old Cars Weekly's bookstore is having a sale on all of their ebooks--18 in all. Before I go any further and "lose" some people who might be interested, these books are not just about old cars. They are miscellaneous automotive books about everything from muscle cars to motorcycles to farm tractors to general auto restoration. All of the ebooks are only $5 each. This represents a markdown of up to 80%. I am somewhat embarrassed to say this, being the consummate frugal person that I am, but I paid $9 for one of these ebooks recently; I thought that it was a good deal then at that price. The sale prices are only good for today (Tuesday). Yes, I know that it's late in the day to be telling you about this, but I just now found out about it. And, you should be checking Mobileread several times a day for new posts anyway. You are checking several times a day, aren't you? ha. Oh, I didn't check all of them, but I am pretty sure that all of the ebooks will be in pdf form. Here's the link. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 05-12-2015 at 01:39 PM. |

Write: Treatments To Sell: Create and Market Your Story Ideas to the Motion Picture and TV Industry by Kenneth Atchity (IMDB, Wikipedia) & Chi-Li Wong (IMDB), their DIY guide to Exactly What It Says In The Title for aspiring screenwriters, originally out from Holt in 1997. This manual is a step by step guide to writing the perfect treatment, and to using it to perfect your dramatic art and market your work to entertainment buyers and gatekeepers. As Hollywood insiders know, the first step in selling your story idea for film or television is preparing a treatment, the brief pitch that sells the concept to a busy producer or agent. Now including updates on the latest trends in the industry, writers-producers Kenneth Atchity and Chi-Li Wong tell readers everything they need to know to create an effective and saleable treatment, one that incorporates such key elements as conflict, likeable characters, plot twists, a climax, and visual drama. Using dozens of examples from actual productions, Writing Treatments To Sell distinguishes between scripts designed for feature films, episodic television, and made-for-TV movies and shows step-by-step how to prepare a treatment for each. Also included is essential information on copyrighting original ideas for screenplays, as well as acquiring rights to adaptable books and true-life stories. With a comprehensive glossary of industry terms and an overview of the various entertainment markets, this book is perfect for students who want to learn how to write an effective script and essential for anyone hoping to get a foot in the door of the exciting scriptwriting business. |

Ebook by George Orwell on the Spanish Civil War--Marked Down 87%, to $1.99.
George Orwell wrote a book on the Spanish Civil War? The George Orwell? I didn't know that. And he was a participant--as a Marxist? There are some real holes in my knowledge that, until now, I didn't know existed.
Students of history will know the Spanish Civil War to be a trial run for World War II for Hitler and the Germans. They supported the Fascists under Franco. The Germans had an opportunity to try out their new weapons, and test new battle doctrines and tactics. And people got to observe savagery and inhumanity by the Germans that would characterize much of their actions in that War. Their brutality in the bombing of the Spanish town of Guernica was immortalized in a famous painting by Pablo Picasso with the title of "Guernica." This should be a fascinating read for several different reasons. Homage to Catalonia. By George Orwell. Rated 4 1/2 stars, from 242 reviews. Print list price $14.95; digital $14.95; Kindle price now $1.99. Mariner Books, publisher. 304 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Homage-Catalon...e+to+Catalonia. Book Description A National Review Top Ten Best Nonfiction Books of the Century “One of Orwell’s very best books and perhaps the best book that exists on the Spanish Civil War.”—The New Yorker In 1936, originally intending merely to report on the Spanish Civil War as a journalist, George Orwell found himself embroiled as a participant—as a member of the Workers’ Party of Marxist Unity. Fighting against the Fascists, he described in painfully vivid and occasionally comic detail life in the trenches—with a “democratic army” composed of men with no ranks, no titles, and often no weapons—and his near fatal wounding. As the politics became tangled, Orwell was pulled into a heartbreaking conflict between his own personal ideals and the complicated realities of political power struggles. Considered one of the finest works by a man V. S. Pritchett called “the wintry conscience of a generation,” Homage to Catalonia is both Orwell’s memoir of his experiences at the front and his tribute to those who died in what he called a fight for common decency. This edition features a new foreword by Adam Hochschild placing the war in greater context and discussing the evolution of Orwell’s views on the Spanish Civil War. Thank you, GTrs8. it is a very interesting book, I actually read it while I was holidaying in Barcelona. A lot of the action took place there, and many of the buildings Orwell mentions are still standing. It shouldn't surprise you that he was a socialist if you read any of his non-fiction. I would recommend the Road to Wigan Pier as well.

Save $44 Dollars on this Ebook on City Planning. Yes, that's $44 (90%)!
90% from the digital list price.
The number of Mobilereaders who might have an interest in this book, I know, are small. But, if you are one who does, you can save a huge amount of money on it right now. Cities for People. By Jan Gehl. Rated 4 1/2 stars, from 23 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $55.00; digital list price $48.99; Kindle price now $4.99. Island Press, publisher. 288 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Cities-People-...ies+for+People. Book Description For more than forty years Jan Gehl has helped to transform urban environments around the world based on his research into the ways people actually use—or could use—the spaces where they live and work. In this revolutionary book, Gehl presents his latest work creating (or recreating) cityscapes on a human scale. He clearly explains the methods and tools he uses to reconfigure unworkable cityscapes into the landscapes he believes they should be: cities for people. Taking into account changing demographics and changing lifestyles, Gehl emphasizes four human issues that he sees as essential to successful city planning. He explains how to develop cities that are Lively, Safe, Sustainable, and Healthy. Focusing on these issues leads Gehl to think of even the largest city on a very small scale. For Gehl, the urban landscape must be considered through the five human senses and experienced at the speed of walking rather than at the speed of riding in a car or bus or train. This small-scale view, he argues, is too frequently neglected in contemporary projects. In a final chapter, Gehl makes a plea for city planning on a human scale in the fast- growing cities of developing countries. A “Toolbox,” presenting key principles, overviews of methods, and keyword lists, concludes the book. The book is extensively illustrated with over 700 photos and drawings of examples from Gehl’s work around the globe. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 05-15-2015 at 11:00 PM. |

Human Transit: How Clearer Thinking about Public Transit Can Enrich Our Communities and Our Lives. By Jarrett Walker. Rated 4 1/2 stars, from 24 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $35.00; digital list price $34.99; regular digital price $19.24; Kindle price now $4.99. http://www.amazon.com/Human-Transit-...+and+Our+Lives. Book Description Public transit is a powerful tool for addressing a huge range of urban problems, including traffic congestion and economic development as well as climate change. But while many people support transit in the abstract, it's often hard to channel that support into good transit investments. Part of the problem is that transit debates attract many kinds of experts, who often talk past each other. Ordinary people listen to a little of this and decide that transit is impossible to figure out. Jarrett Walker believes that transit can be simple, if we focus first on the underlying geometry that all transit technologies share. In Human Transit, Walker supplies the basic tools, the critical questions, and the means to make smarter decisions about designing and implementing transit services. Human Transit explains the fundamental geometry of transit that shapes successful systems; the process for fitting technology to a particular community; and the local choices that lead to transit-friendly development. Whether you are in the field or simply a concerned citizen, here is an accessible guide to achieving successful public transit that will enrich any community. Completing Our Streets: The Transition to Safe and Inclusive Transportation Networks. By Barbara McCann. Rated 5 stars, but from only 8 reviews at Amazon; rated 4.14, from 7 reviews at GoodReads. Print list price $28.00; digital list price $27.99; Kindle price now $4.99. Island Press, publisher. 224 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Completing-Our...ation+Networks. Book Description Across the country, communities are embracing a new and safer way to build streets for everyone—even as they struggle to change decades of rules, practice, and politics that prioritize cars. They have discovered that changing the design of a single street is not enough: they must upend the way transportation agencies operate. Completing Our Streets begins with the story of how the complete streets movement united bicycle riders, transportation practitioners and agencies, public health leaders, older Americans, and smart growth advocates to dramatically re-frame the discussion of transportation safety. Next, it explores why the transportation field has been so resistant to change—and how the movement has broken through to create a new multi-modal approach. In Completing Our Streets, Barbara McCann, founder of the National Complete Streets Coalition, explains that the movement is not about street design. Instead, practitioners and activists have changed the way projects are built by focusing on three strategies: reframe the conversation; build a broad base of political support; and provide a clear path to a multi-modal process. McCann shares stories of practitioners in cities and towns from Charlotte, North Carolina to Colorado Springs, Colorado who have embraced these strategies to fundamentally change the way transportation projects are chosen, planned, and built. The complete streets movement is based around a simple idea: streets should be safe for people of all ages and abilities, whether they are walking, driving, bicycling, or taking the bus. Completing Our Streets gives practitioners and activists the strategies, tools, and inspiration needed to translate this idea into real and lasting change in their communities. |

80% Markdown on this Ebook on Handling Emotional Vampires in Our Lives. Now $1.99.
Books seem to be legion on the subject that this book covers. Maybe this one says one or more things that elevates it above the others, however. Two things make me think that it does. One, it is rated very highly. Two, it is considered a classic in its field, according to the author's bio.
Emotional Vampires: Dealing With People Who Drain You Dry: Dealing With People Who Drain You Dry. By Albert J. Bernstein. Rated 4 1/2 stars, from 170 reviews at the present moment. Print list price N/A; regular(?) digital price $9.99; Kindle price now $1.99. McGraw-Hill, publisher. 258 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Emotional-Vamp...+Drain+You+Dry. Book Description Best-selling author Albert J. Bernstein helped thousands of people deal with the dangerously stupid at work in Dinosaur Brains. In Emotional Vampires he goes even further to protect unsuspecting mortals from more devious and harmful creatures vampires ready to bite, suck, and kill the emotional and psychological wellbeing of their victims. Like the fabled demons, these vampires come in many shapes: -The living dead who think their “talents” place them above the laws of nature -Lords of darkness with huge egos and tiny consciences -Scary monsters who use their tempers in the same way terrorists use bombs -Blood-suckers who think others were created for their convenience Emotional Vampires tells readers how to spot a vampire in their lives, which defense strategies to employ to prevent one from striking, and what to do if and when they find themselves under attack. Author Biography Dr. Al Bernstein is a Clinical Psychologist, Business Consultant and author. Over the past 30 years, he has worked with individual clients of all kinds and consulted with businesses large and small. His writing reflects the variety of his experiences as well as his humor and solid common sense. His books offer step-by-step instructions for dealing with difficult people and situations. Two of them, Dinosaur Brains, on the role of instincts in business, and Emotional Vampires on personality disorders are considered classics in their respective fields. Born, raised and educated in Virginia, Dr. Al now lives in Oregon with his wife, children, granddaughter, two dogs and three cats. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 05-16-2015 at 03:58 PM. |
