Here's one of my favorite examples of consistently confusing English. If laughter is pronounced lafter why isn't daughter pronounced dafter? LOL

This is the last book (at least so far) in Chris Wooding's SteamPunk series Tales of the Ketty Jay, but that's working out ok for me because Jim Butcher's new SteamPunk series, The Cinder Spires Debuts on September 29th with... ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by alansplace; 05-15-2015 at 02:58 PM. |

![]() Next up, a quick re-read of Dragon Ship by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, getting ready for Dragon in Exile which releases tomorrow. And on the audio book front, reading Pride of Chanur, first in an old series by C.J. Cherryh. I'm pretty sure I read these many years ago, but it's been long enough that I'm not remembering much. |

Holy Island by L J Ross, cracking debut novel set on Lindisfarne. One of the 99p books well worth reading.

Recent reads:
"The Snake, the Crocodile and the Dog", by Elizabeth Peter. The 7th book is the "Amelia Peabody" series of Egyptological mysteries. An attack of Amelia's husband, Professor Emerson, leaves him with amnesia, and no memory of his marriage to her. Amelia takes him back to Amarma, the place where they originally met, to try restore his memory, but a series of mysterious events ensure. Excellent and great fun, as always in this series. Very highly recommended! "Star Guard" by Andre Norton; the first half of the "Star Soldiers" omnibus. Originally bought from Baen a very long time ago. Norton's books tend to be rather formulaic, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one, which tells the story of a group of human mercenaries on an alien world. Recommended. "The Crime at Black Dudley" by Margery Allingham. I've been waiting for the ebook release of this first book in the "Campion" series for years, because I always like to read a series in order, and it was worth the wait. A thoroughly-enjoyable classic "English Country House" murder mystery. Campion only appears as a fairly minor character in this book, whose "detective" is a pathologist, Dr George Abbershaw, who is a guest at the house party. Highly recommended. |

Joyce Carol Oates has channeled Stephen King and written a short homage of sorts -- Jack of Spades -- a well written psychological suspense tale with a most unreliable narrator, who happens to be a writer that critics are comparing to Stephen King.
Oates has written in other authors' styles/voices [see Wild Nights] - but AFAIK this is her first novel using a living author's voice. It was reviewed in the NYT BR as part of Marilyn Stasio's new mystery collage column, but I wished King had reviewed it. As you read it, and the narrator compares himself to King, you begin to wonder what Oates' purpose was .... trying to show that anyone can write like King, taking a scholarly poke at King, celebrating King's writing, .... or just having fun. IMHO Oates' oeuvre has been denigrated by 'experts' - partly b/c cause of its volume, partly b/c of its uneven quality, and perhaps mostly b/c of its uncomfortable content focused largely on violence amongst very nasty or unlikeable characters. The absence of The Accursed from any major literary award list well illustrates the reluctance of the literary establishment to value her writings. Just finished "Star Ranger" by Andre Norton, which comprises the second half of a Baen Omnibus edition called "Star Soldiers", which I bought in 2001 or so. In the dying days of the Galactic Empire, one of the last ships of the Stellar Patrol, which has been the force of law and order for a thousand years, makes a crash landing on an obscure planet so far from the centre of the Empire that it's not on any star chart. The survivors of the crew explore the planet and make some surprising discoveries. Pretty good SF. Moderately recommended.

It's JCO; a woman who can read from one of her books out loud with one hand and write something entirely different with the other. My bet is it's all of the above.
