Vanishing Point (A Sharon McCone Mystery Book 23) by Marcia Muller - $1.99
Amazon US | Google | Kobo | B&N | eBooks.com
Quote:
In the latest installment in this critically acclaimed series, Sharon McCone is hired to investigate one of San Luis Obispo County's most puzzling cold cases. A generation ago, Laurel Greenwood, a housewife and artist, inexplicably vanished, leaving her young daughter alone. Now, new evidence suggests that the missing woman may have led a strange double life. But before McCone can penetrate the tangled mystery, she must first solve a second disappearance--that of her client, the now grown daughter of Laurel Greenwood. The case, which forces Sharon to explore the darker sides of two marriages, comes uncomfortably close on the heels of her own marriage to Hy Ripinsky, and she begins to doubt the wisdom of her impulsive trip to the Reno wedding chapel.

Axeman's Jazz, the second in the Skip Langdon series by Julie Smith, is free right now on Amazon US for an unknown period of time. Smith rotates her books around through free and $0.99 fairly often, so most of you who want this probably have it, but for those who are new-ish to MR, here's the info:

http://www.amazon.com/Axemans-Jazz-O...dp/B007YCEW10/

Spoiler:
Quote:
The SECOND book in the Edgar Award-winning Skip Langdon mystery series by Julie Smith.

"A multilayered masterpiece ... I read this one on the E train at 5:15 a.m. and didn't look up once. . . . Julie Smith's New Orleans is a subterranean Mardi Gras where the masks cover smiling sociopaths and even Deadly Nightshade comes sheathed in silk." - Andrew Vachss

“Gritty, witty, & mesmerizing! Langdon is a splendid female heroine.” – People Magazine

WHAT’S THE PERFECT KILLING FIELD FOR A MURDERER?

A place where he (or maybe she) can learn your secrets from your own mouth and then make friends over coffee. A supposedly "safe" place where anonymity is the norm. The horror who calls himself The Axeman has figured it out and claimed his territory—he's cherry-picking his murder victims in the 12-Step programs of New Orleans.

And he's had the gall to name himself after a historical serial killer. He just needs to go down, and fast, because this is New Aw'lins, dawlin'—half the town is either alcoholic or co-dependent!

Who better to take him out than tall, funny, social-misfit Skip Langdon, now a homicide detective on the Axeman team, a gig that takes her into the 12-Step groups to meet the suspects (giving the author a chance for gentle satire). As Skip threads her fascinated way from one self-help group to another, she finds she has more in common with the twelve-steppers than just the murder—her mother, for one thing, whom she encounters at Overeaters Anonymous! And she knows what they do not: that among their anonymous numbers is a murderous, and dangerously attractive psychopath…

"Smashing . . . New Orleans Mourning was a tough act to follow. The Axeman’s Jazz is a wonderful, completely satisfying encore." - The Denver Post

"Julie Smith not only firmly establishes her claim to the New Orleans crime scene, but she explores an intriguing new franchise for the serial killer." – Sue Grafton

"Marvelous!" – Chicago Tribune

An action-packed crime thriller for fans of Showtime's DEXTER (and all serial killer stories), hard-boiled detective writers like Ace Atkins, Laura Lippman, Sue Grafton, Linda Barnes, Nevada Barr, J.A. Jance, and Marcia Muller, lovers of female sleuths and the deeper, more psychological police procedurals, like those of Tana French; and, of course, anyone who's ever been to New Orleans, or wanted to!

A bunch of Margery Allingham and Max Allan Collins titles in the US Kindle Big Deal on right now through May 24; also a number of books by some other well-known authors (mostly just one or two).

Any other place besides Amazon I can buy the Jules Poiret books? Also are any Public Domain -- I should think they're old enough at a century or so! Yes, they're very cheap at Amazon but they only take credit cards and I prefer to use PayPal.

The Jules Poiret mysteries are said to have been by Frank Howel Evans (1867-1932)

There is very little information about him around. There is an F Howel Evans in the 1881 census (age 14, a scholar at the Royal Naval School at Deptford, Kent.

Now that I've realised that he published his books as Howel Evans, I have found some at Abebooks.

And a search at the British Library does turn up his books in their catalogue. So he seems to be real.

As he died in 1932, his books are out of copyright in most of the world. In the US any of his works published before 1923 are in the public domain. The others are probably in the US public domain unless they were copyrighted in the US and that copyright renewed.

Patriots by Kevin Doherty

Russia. The 1980s with the Cold War is still raging.

Mikhail Gorbachev's strict vision for Russia is driving out the economic corruption that riddled the Soviet regime.
Nikolai Serov watches as traitors in positions of the highest authority are forced into revealing their hands, knowing that he does not want to fall victim to the same fate of arrest and execution.
As head of the KGB's First Chief Directorate and one of Moscow's leading black marketeers and drug kings, Serov recognises that he has only one chance to construct a sophisticated plot which will ensure his own freedom.
Serov's intricate plan unfolds in a calculated web of murder and betrayal as he activates a Russian mole who has lain dormant for the past twenty years and now is at the top rung of Britain's MI5.

Kevin Doherty is also the author of `Villa Normandie'.

Food Fight by Anne Penketh

After the sudden death of her French husband, Serge, Susan needs a change of scenery.
Leaving her beloved London home behind, she moves to Washington DC to pursue her high-flying career as a successful marketing executive for the giant food company, DeKripps.

Desperately missing her husband and trying to keep tabs on her troublesome daughter, Susan struggles to find her feet in her new environment. The one solace is her job, which she loves, ... and the stash of delicious new `Guilty Secrets' chocolates in her apartment which she can't seem to get enough of.

In the process of launching a marketing campaign for her favourite Guilty Secrets chocolate boxes, Susan stumbles upon a few other secrets too - ones that could incriminate the company and all its unknowing employees ... and ones that might explain why she keeps having to buy bigger clothes.

You may be right, I will post it there

What definition are you using ?

The blurb suggest a crime is involved.

Is _Komarr_ by Lois McMaster Bujold a romance, a thriller, Space Opera, a (secret) police procedural ?
