Linux has been brimming with potential since my grown children were in diapers. There's a reason why they don't charge for it.

Using a linux LiveCD to perform repairs/maintenance on a Windows installation is pretty funny to me.

A linux LiveCD would not have any problems reading your DVD drive and copying over the necessary installation files onto your Windows drive. You can then reboot into Windows, run the driver installers (thus repairing Windows) and finally torch the linux LiveCD in a knee-jerk reaction (until the next time Windows does something unutterably stupid, when you will have to create a new one).

There is no requirement to get brainwashed by the linux recovery disk.

The joke is that the fastest way to fix a non-functional Windows installation is to use one of it's biggest competitors.

Oddly enough, the majority of people on this forum are active Linux users and have paid for the privilege.

The majority of MR members are active Linux users? That's an extraordinary claim to make. Do you have any data to back it up?

That's perfectly true, but I certainly didn't interpret the previous poster's message as meaning that. It's hardly pertinent to the discussion of PC operating systems.

Linux has met (and surpassed) my expectations for about eight years now.

It depends what you use a PC for. In my own case I'm a keen photographer and my "must have" program is Adobe Lightroom which, to the best of my knowledge, has no reasonable Linux alternative; it's Windows and Mac only.

I can understand that. I once worked in a print shop -- certain applications were necessary there, so you used what platform you had to. When folks ask me about PC games and Linux, I tell them that they would probably be happier sticking with Windows. But if you mostly use your computer for email, web browsing, writing -- general computer usage -- Linux is a fine choice. And it's not as if the platform could not handle games, or Lightroom, or the others, it's just that the market is too small. So it's kind of a Catch-22 situation.

At any rate, for my needs, Linux is the much better choice. Less maintenance required and fewer hassles with updating. And it's faster and lighter on the same hardware.

Thank you - looks interesting. Lightroom really is "the" program in this field, though, so it would make sense for me to stick with it.
