Windows 10 - free upgrade to those with PC using Windows 7 or 8 - Page 32

Yes I know its a preview, but damn I wish I could get a chance to preview it.
After 10061 killed the whole system I took the machine apart, disconnected all the drives, save one and did a fresh install of 7 with the intent of doing the upgrade to 10074 using Windows Update.

After 150ish updates and force for Svc Pack 1 I let the upgrade run overnight. In the AM the power button is inop so I shut the machine down. When I restarted it later....It reverted back to 7.

50-60 updates later I try again and it re downloads 10074 and I let it run overnight and ..... Same thing. Nothing works and it reboots back to 7.

On and off a few times letting it check for more updates and we are down to 1. Yep. Lets download 10074 again.. NOPE

This makes 4 different builds in a row that barely run or wont run at all. I'm thinking its on my end but I couldn't tell you where.

Why don't you just install version 10061, and then upgrade to version 10074 in the fast ring; or is that not possible for some reason? Is there not yet a test-ISO of version 10074?

I had 10061 in there and was DOA and it wouldn't open up the settings app to upgrade and that was the case on 2 different machines. One was a desktop and the other a Macbook Pro running a Virtual Machine.

I tried fixing it from some info I found on the Insiders Forum but at that point it rewrote the boot instructions so instead of stopping at the boot selection screen where I could pick either 7 or 10, and it would just run 10 so I was stuck.

I disconnected the drive from the system but then I was getting a boot error so I was going to wipe and re install.

I first tried to reinstall from the 10074 ISO but Windows didnt like the file. I tried to run it from a bootable USB and a DVD but neither would run. So at that point I re installed 7 and went through the upgrade process but after 2 attempts and failures I stopped.

Im re downloading the ISO again and am going to try a fresh DVD and see what happens.

So far I've only had a problem with build 9926 not upgrading.

Boy oh Boy I'm glad I did not try Windows 10 before 10074. I have to say it was a bumpy ride the upgrade but I have it and it is working!

The only BIG negative I ran into and it is MY fault as I should have checked into it before making the jump but Windows 10 WILL NOT SUPPORT Windows Media Center!

I have an HDHomerun Prime and lost that ability after the upgrade!

So I downloaded a fresh ISO, created a DVD and ran the upgrade. All seemed fine as it actually ran and opened up, then...

The first issue was no internet, because it somehow forgot the network adapters on the Mobo. I thought no big deal Ill just reinstall them...Well no, because at the same time it lost the network adapters it decided it no longer wants to see the DVD player tha it just used to install itself.

Definitely not ready for prime time at this point.

Im back to trying to fix the primary version of 7 at this point is going to require a format of the drive and reistalling everything. Maybe I'll look back on this in a few weeks when there are a few more updates when its a little more usable.

As far as Media center goes, I've never used it myself.

I've looked around and it seems as if its a crap shoot. There are a lot of "I'm having a problem with ..." threads floating around the net, but people do seem to be able to make it work.

I haven't found any one else that's had the issue of where its messed up a dual boot like mine.

Perhaps you should reboot using a linux LiveCD and copy over the driver files.

I've never had any desire to play with Linux. I'm just not in to it enough.

Just use it as a recovery CD, since it sure beats reinstalling Windows. There is no obligation to play with it.

Ive never used Linux, nor had any desire to. So I didn't understand the terminology of the joke.
