Lots of authors doing it. I just saw two more do it. I think it's a case of hoping readers will buy the first. (As an aside, I don't think it works. Even when taking out ads for books, the first in a series always outsells an subsequent books even if the series is an older one. There used to be some ad places that would not allow an ad for a second book unless the first was discounted or also on sale.)

Here's a second in series that is free. I read the first and recommend it. (Cozy mystery).

The first was a fun read. I haven't read the second yet.

I didn't see it free on Kobo so it is probably about to go off free.

Two more Joe Gunther mysteries by Archer Mayor on US Kindle countdown for about 1/2 more day at $0.99, before going to $1.99 (which is still more than 1/2 off the normal price of $4.99) for an unknown amount of time. Both have been on countdown before:

The Disposable Man is the ninth in the series.
link: http://www.amazon.com/Disposable-Man...dp/B00C3LSSMG/
Spoiler:
Quote:
When a local quarry yields up a garroted body with bad dental work and toes tattooed in Cyrillic, Joe Gunther figures it for a Russian mafia killing, rare as that might be in Vermont. But it's so very… tidy. So very… professional. Then the CIA calls, inviting Gunther down to Washington for some friendly “assistance” with his case. Suddenly he‘s caught up a shadowy game of cross and double-cross—manipulated by cynical cold warriors who seem not to have gotten the memo—and Gunther soon realizes that he's a pawn that both sides are willing to sacrifice.

Scent of Evil is the third in the series.
link: http://www.amazon.com/Scent-Evil-Gun...dp/B00C3M50YY/
Spoiler:
Quote:
When the body of a fast-living young stockbroker is found in a shallow grave, suspicion first falls on a cuckolded policeman. Lt. Joe Gunther investigates the increasingly bizarre details of the crime, but finds that he’s too far behind events to prevent a second murder. Indeed, whoever is responsible always seems to be a few steps ahead, as if there’s a leak on the force. Sweltering August heat does nothing to calm the increasingly agitated town selectmen, who demand results.

Fast-paced and intricately-plotted, with the unflinching attention to forensic detail that his readers have come to expect, Scent of Evil is the third of Archer Mayor’s critically-acclaimed Joe Gunther mysteries.

This sounds more like a thriller than a murder mystery, but this thread covers both. The Fire Ship is the second in the Robin and Richard Heritage/Sir William Heritage nautical series by Peter Tonkin. It's a $0.99 for about one more day before going back to $3.99.

link: http://www.amazon.com/Fire-Ship-Pete...dp/B00V58JGFG/
Spoiler:
Quote:
Richard Mariner and his wife, Robin, are in the Indian Ocean on the trial voyage of a high-tech sailing boat designed, built, and owned by two Vietnam veterans, ‘Doc’ Weary and Sam Hood, when they encounter a burning freighter.

She has been strafed by gunfire, the crew has abandoned her—and her cargo had been armaments.

In the Persian Gulf, Prometheus II, the giant flagship of the Heritage Mariner tanker fleet, and its crew, are seized by terrorists. But the holders of the hostages make no demands.

Sir William Heritage, Robin's father, and Richard's friend and partner, cannot contact his daughter and son-in-law, and is unable to obtain any information about who has hijacked his ship, or why.

He flies to Bahrain to investigate—and is immediately kidnapped himself.

The three incidents are linked to one mysterious terrorist group - a group controlled by a madman.

From the northern waters of the Indian Ocean to the sinister explosives dumping zones in the Gulf of Oman, and from the beautiful shimmering waters of the Gulf to the fierce heat of Hormuz, this power-packed sea thriller speeds to a high-octane climax.

‘A master of seagoing adventure!’ Clive Cussler

‘This kind of story has built-in excitement. Engrossing.’ The New York Times

‘Tonkin is a superb storyteller who creates big, brash, swashbuckling adventures with taut suspense, fast-paced action and tough, resourceful characters.’ Booklist

'The complex storyline commands full interest" Publishers Weekly

‘A bang-up story, which Tonkin tells with an insiders skill.’ New York Daily News.

Peter Tonkin was born in Northern Ireland, and was raised in the UK, Holland, Germany, and the Persian Gulf. He has written thirty novels including twenty-two Richard Mariner novels.

Thanks!

Wish publishers (or descriptions, or Amazon's categories) didn't make it so hard to decide whether a book on WWII was fact or fiction. The first above, "The Auslander Brigade" by Colin Evans is listed as a novel, so that appears to be fiction. The second, "Stalingrad Heroes" by Alan David, is classified as "history" ..... but then it calls itself a "thriller". So I gather that it too is fiction.

I'm trying to stick to reading only fact about WWII and the Holocaust. Just for my own knowledge and my own reasons.

Last Chance at Happiness is the 57th (!!!) in the Jules Poiret series by Frank Howell Evans. This early 1900's series supposedly was inspired by Sherlock Holmes, and supposedly in turn inspired Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot. The book description on Amazon US is succinct:

Quote:
Master detective Jules Poiret meets a lady at the park.
link: http://www.amazon.com/Chance-Happine...dp/B00WW40ZCK/

The first in this series, Peril, is also free (still or again, not sure) per this post from last year:

The President's Henchman is the first in Joseph Flynn's Jim McGill series, which started out with some conventionally published titles, and now is being continued self-pubbed by the author's own Stray Dog press. I've read and enjoyed most of the books in this series. This one is on US Kindle Countdown at $1.99 for about 4 1/4 more days before going up to $4.99

link: http://www.amazon.com/Presidents-Hen...dp/B00DPYK8KK/

Spoiler:
Quote:
According to the polls, it's only a matter of time — and not that long a time — before the United States elects its first female president. Which will make her husband — what?

Well, if he's the ex-cop who solved the murder of the president's first husband and brought the killers to justice … and if he's not the kind of guy to stand on formality … and if he doesn't want to be the head of the FBI … and if he takes out a license and becomes the first private eye to live in the White House …

That would make him The President's Henchman.

Jim McGill's first case is to find out who is stalking a member of the White House press corps, before that stalker turns the tables on McGill and maybe even threatens the president herself. He also has to be a shadow advisor to a young Air Force investigator who is looking into a he-said she-said charge of adultery leveled against a female colonel working at the Pentagon, a case with the potential to derail the new president's administration before it has a chance to begin.

The Mycroft Holmes Casebook is a set of pastiche stories by David Dickinson, who is better known (by me, at least) for his Lord Francis Powerscourt historical mystery series, many of which I've read and enjoyed.

This title is on US Kindle Countdown at $0.99 for about 4 1/4 more days before going up to $4.99.

link: http://www.amazon.com/Mycroft-Holmes...dp/B00I5WVKTA/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Sherlock Holmes has retired to the country to look after bees. And Dr Watson has returned full time to his medical profession.

So when a new case comes along, Inspector Lestrade turns instead to Sherlock’s reclusive but highly intelligent older brother Mycroft.

The Mycroft Holmes Casebook’ collects together all six of David Dickinson's best-selling Mycroft Holmes detective adventures in one place. From the City of London, to the finest country estates, Mycroft proves every bit as ingenious as his brother.

It includes:

The Case of the Silver Birches’:

Inspector Lestrade is facing the biggest case of his career. The Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and the Governor of the Bank of England have learnt through a variety of sources that Britain’s enemies were trying to debase the currency. Mycroft tracks the gang through the banks and Treasuries of Europe, his brain travelling faster than the swiftest express train…

The Case of the Naval Engineer’:

When a corpse is found by the fire in Mycroft Holmes’s rooms in London’s Pall Mall early one morning, the brother of the country’s most famous detective is about to face the greatest mystery of his career. Within two hours, Mycroft Holmes has been arrested on a charge of murder and taken in handcuffs to Wormwood Scrubs prison. Has he been framed by his greatest enemy, the elusive master criminal the German Count Von Stoltenburg?

The Case of the Missing Popes’:

Mycroft Holmes is approached by a distraught young aristocrat, the son of the Home Secretary Lord Melrose. There has been a mysterious burglary at his father’s mansion. Two famous Raphael Popes have disappeared. Mycroft travels north by a special train. Did the thieves break in or was it an inside job?

The Case of the Bankers’ Conclave’:

A financial crisis, and a bank on the brink of ruin. The City of London, the great financial hub of the British Empire, stands on the edge of collapse. And yet, in the background, an attack on the City's lines of communication are making the matter worse. Mycroft Holmes believes dark forces are at work. And he has just a few hours to prove his theory correct …

The Murder at the Diogenes Club’:

Silence is golden at the Diogenes, Mycroft's Pall Mall club. You are only allowed to speak in the Stranger’s Room. But for William St John Plunkett neither silence nor speech is an option any more. He is found dead at the bottom of the great staircase, blood and brains spattered all over the marble floor. Mycroft's health is failing, but he summons all his powers to resolve the murder mystery on his own doorstep…

The Case of the Romanov Pearls’:

The White Pearls of the Romanovs were among the most famous jewels in the world. Won at a late night gambling session at the Pushkin Club in St Petersburg, they eventually came into the possession of the British Duchess of Alcester as part of her dazzling jewel collection. One evening they are stolen from her neck at the Majestic Hotel in Brighton. Luckily for her Mycroft Holmes is a guest at the same hotel…

Praise for the Mycroft Holmes series:

'The stories are atmospheric, fast-moving, ingenious and very enjoyable.' - Roger Johnson, The District Messenger

David Dickinson is the best-selling author of the Lord Powerscourt series of historical mysteries, including ‘Death of a Pilgrim’ and ‘Death of an Old Master’.

The Dying of the Light is the fourth in the Augustus Maltravers series by Robert Richardson. It's on US Kindle countdown at $0.99 for about 4 1/4 more days before going up to $3.99.

link: http://www.amazon.com/Dying-Light-Ro...dp/B00V6UB6QA/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Accompanying his girlfriend Tess Davy down to Porthennis, Cornwall, Augustus Maltravers expects to have some peace and quiet.

But the violent death of sculptress Martha Shaw changes everything.

Maltravers believes she was murdered and not the victim of a fatal accident.

But who would want to kill an elderly sculptress?

Maltravers soon becomes suspicious of Martha’s threatening gardener, who seems to be using Martha’s death for his own benefit.

Augustus embarks on a quest to find the answers and is convinced they lie with the elderly artists.

His informal investigations lead him back to the dead founder of the Botallick theatre, Agnes Thorpe.

Is there a connection between Agnes’s and Martha’s death?

Or is this all just a coincidence?

There is a deep secret that Augustus is very close to uncovering … but can he prove any of it?

The Dying of the Light’ is the fourth in the series of Augustus Maltravers detective stories and follows on from the ‘The Book of the Dead’.

"The engaging Maltravers steps carefully among a nest of vipers in an ageing art/drama colony in spectacular Cornwall, uncovering old jealousies and fanatical resentments. Intelligent, with deft touches of humour" - Sunday Telegraph

"Sharp, witty and a sure feel for brooding Cornish menace" - The Times

"Richardson paints a robust rogues' gallery and summons up an icy teraiinal frisson" - Sunday Times

Robert Richardson became a journalist in 1960. In 1985, his first crime novel, ‘The Latimer Mercy’, the first in the series of Augustus Maltravers detective stories, won the CWA John Creasey Memorial Award for the best crime novel. Robert Richardson is also the author of ‘The Book of the Dead’ and ‘Skeleton Key’.
