On the Chapters site, it reads: "Kobo eReaders must be returned to one of our Chapters, Indigo or Coles stores." Last I heard, someone who wanted to return a device from the U.S. was told to find someone in Canada who could walk it into a store for them.

The Kobo site doesn't have a clear policy on returns anywhere on their site, though I gather if you purchase a defective device from another vendor (e.g., Chapters or an indie bookstore), they may exchange it?

The indie bookstores I contacted either never responded or responded that they do not accept returns on Kobo readers at all.

I'm not trying to be snarky or troll-ish. I am very tempted by Kobo devices. I've even put them in an online shopping cart several times. But I always stop short of clicking the "buy" button when I think about the return process if I am one of the unlucky few who happen to get a bad screen (not common, I know, but it happens).
Someone asked this question of Chapters when ordering a H2O from the US and posted the response from CS in that thread. I believe Chapters agreed to allow returns by mail, but I don't remember their exact wording.

Edit: Here is the post https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...40&postcount=1

Not sure about any general rule for internet purchases, but Kobo offers those buying direct a 30 return option.

From their site...
Quote:
Returns
If you are dissatisfied with your eReader purchased through Kobo.com for any reason, you have thirty (30) calendar days after the date of purchase to return the eReader to Kobo. All delivery charges required to return the eReader are at your expense. Upon receipt of the returned eReader, Kobo will refund the cost of the eReader to the credit card charged at the time of purchase, less any applicable delivery charges. Please contact customer care for all order cancellations and returns (http://www.kobo.com/help).

GOT IT_COMPARATIVE REVIEW

Got my Glo HD a few hours ago. Loaded up the library, tweaked the settings and did some reading. My impressions follow.

Readers I currently Own: Multiple 1st and 2nd gen Kindles. Multiple paperwhites (1st and 2nd Gen), two DX readers (Pearl screens) a Voyage and a Kobo H20. The DXs and the H20 have been my goto readers. The Paperwhites have blotches (even the 2nd gen). The Voyage COULD have been the best but the yellow at top, bluish at bottom coloring ruined it for me. I use it with the light off and external lamp. I like the high rez screen just not the bizzare uneven color. Yes I am fussy.

So how does the Glo HD stack up? AMAZING! My unit has perfectly even coloring and lighting. No blotches! Crisp text. Much clearer than my H20. The page turn speeds are fine. I can not find anything to complain about!

I am thrilled. I have finally obtained a great, front lit eink reader without obvious flaws.

Ordered a Glo cover from Amazon since these appear to fit the HD version.

If you get a good screen, this is the reader to have!

But I always stop short of clicking the "buy" button when I think about the return process if I am one of the unlucky few who happen to get a bad screen (not common, I know, but it happens).
Before I bought my regular Glos locally from a bookstore, I asked about returns if it's defective and the bookstore would accept the returns for 30 days. It was even printed on their receipt. Perfectly normal for purchases most anywhere. If the reader is defective, I would think the store HAS to accept the return and provide you with another reader. If you bought a book that had a printing error and was missing a page, wouldn't you expect to return it to the bookstore where you bought it for a corrected copy? Defective is defective, they can't single out ereaders and say no, we don't accept returns.

If my Glo HD was defective from Chapters, I would fully expect to have to return it to the store at my expense for the postage. Just like I would have had to take it back to a store locally if I bought it here. They mailed it out, why wouldn't they accept it by mail in return? I'd call them first and find out their preferred procedure, often an RMA is issued first when returning anything by mail under warranty and I would think Chapters might do the same.

If the reader just stops working after 30 days, then it becomes Kobo's responsibility to fix or replace it under their warranty, regardless of where it was purchased. Stores are no longer liable. If you provide receipts proving the date of purchase, I don't see how Kobo can refuse to honor their warranty if bought from anywhere other than Kobo directly. Kobo isn't just the store you purchased from, it's the manufacturer so must honor the warranty.

I really didn't worry about the return of a defective reader at all.

The screens may be made by the same manufacturer, but then you have the light guide, and the LEDs. These are separate component parts and can exhibit differences when all put together.

Nice! How does text compare to the voyage, which has the same screen. Particularly sharpness and contrast. Thanks

Pearl screens came from the manufacturer with frontlight and touch system already integrated as a module. I couldn't find any info about Carta, but it is probably the same.

But not the LEDs, which seem to be a big part of the problem.

Given the problems I've had just buying books from Kobo, I can't even believe I'm asking about this reader. But logic aside, how black is the text on the Glo HD? That's one thing about my Paperwhite (Gen 1) that has always disappointed me. The text is gray, not black. How is the text on the Glo HD? Is it actually black? And is the background fairly light?

I'm secretly hoping it's crap so I can stop being tempted to buy one.

Sorry to have to burst the bubble on your secret hopes that it is crap but the Glo HD is pretty great overall. 300PPI combined with adjustable font weight option, makes for some pretty nice bold and sharp text. In natural lighting especially, the text looks as black as ink with the text weight up to about 75%.

I've owned the PW2 and Voyage(which I returned) but this hands down has the best screen. It's a very good e-reader. Get yourself the DRM stripping Calibre plugin and convert your kindle books to epubs.

PS - take a look at Ripplenger's photos on page 57 to see how black the text looks.

The Kobo code perkopolis takes 10% off the Kobo Glo HD. And the H2O and Aura also.

Sadly, to the best of my knowledge, the U.S. does not have any law like this.

Thanks! This is the post that worried me: "For those ordering from Chapters outside of Canada, be aware that they won't do an online exchange, regardless of what the site/receipt says. I was advised to mail my H20 to 'someone in Canada' and have them walk it to a B&M store. Really?"

You would think so, but when I inquired, one indie told me in no uncertain terms that they accepted no returns on ereaders, and another did not respond at all.

That post doesn't say though what the purchase date was when it was returned. It's possible it was over 30 days, and in that case it becomes Kobo's responsibility for warranty replacements, not Chapters.

Chapters seems like a very reputable store. Their site states a 30 day return policy and I really don't have any reason to doubt it. As far as indie stores and their return policy, it's best to ask up front like you did, and then not purchase from them (in fact, I'd probably never risk shopping at any store with that policy for anything). When I bought mine locally, I did ask up front and was assured that yes, it could be returned.

The Voyage overall has a whiter/bluer screen with the light at the 50% level vs the Glo HD. The Glo has a warmer color than the Voyage but a cooler color than the H20. The Voyage has that weird yellowish area at the top with any light settings above 30% or so.

The Voyage text does seem to be a tad sharper with better contrast. But the Glo HD text contrast/sharpness is noticeably better than the H20.

The Glo HD is an excellent read.
