MobileRead's 10 best fiction: Survey [Discussion]

If you're planning to vote in the (coming soon) threads on MobileRead's 10 best books of the 20th century, please fill in this survey - it's anonymous, just to give an idea of the range of people responding.

For Genre: please check the main genres that you read. If you don't read any of the listed genres, just don't check any of them!

Query: No place for a master's degree between bachelor's and doctorate?

Paul thank you for putting together the Survey.

I feel I'd like to raise a couple of points about the criteria: I'm not sure that 'ethnicity' as a value is as relevant as nationality is.

And can I suggest that this thread be used as a test bed for survey questions and that after consensus another survey thread be posted and this one deleted?

Paul, thanks for putting so much work into all this. For ethnicities, I'm surprised not to see at the least Latino/Hispanic and Middle Eastern as possibilities. And as issybird pointed out, no option for a master's.

OK, I'm willing to accept I may not have come up with the best survey choices. I'll stop this one, and we can discuss things.

There can be at most 30 items in this poll. Which is why no Masters between Bachelor and Ph.D.

No Hispanic category, because I took the items from a UK list, which probably wasn't a brilliant idea. I'm willing to re-work or drop the Ethnicity category.

The problem with a Nationality category is that there are SO many!

Suggestions for changes to the questions are welcome. I'll start a new poll later this week once we're happy with a set of questions.

Just a general overview of the voting population, for fun. Also, if it turns out that 80% of the voters read SF/Fantasy as their preferred genre, it may explain results.

Aren't Chinese and Japanese subsets of Asian?

I think country of origin might be better than ethnicity. There are probably too many countries to list, so how about: American; European; Australasian; Asian;South American; African (maybe Middle-Eastern as well?)?

Given that non-fiction was specifically excluded from the nominations, it could be removed from the genres too (the question becomes "which fiction genres do you read most often?").

Is Sex:Other a joke, or do we really have members who are neither male nor female?

No idea, but at least 1 in 2000 are born intersex, and there are people who do not identify as male or female.
