My mail person brought mine this afternoon! Woo hoo! I've not done any comparisons yet, need to charge it up and run the patch.
First impressions. The screen on my Glo HD is yellow at the top and whiter at the bottom. Page turns are noticeably slower on the HD as compared to the Voyage, and slightly slower than the Glo. Side by side, the text on the HD is much sharper than the Glo. The light on the HD is not quite as bright at 100%. Side by side, the Voyage screen looks better than the HD. The text on the Voyage is sharper. The Voyage screen is whiter and the light is brighter. This could be due to the yellow tint of the HD. These comparisons were done in a semi dark room (light coming from a window across the room). Last edited by booklover6; 05-02-2015 at 06:55 PM. |

That is a good point. I used the side loaded font Charis SIL Modified Larger on the Kobo Glo and Glo HD, and the same font embedded in the Kindle Voyage.
Switching the Voyage and the Glo HD to Ceacilia, the difference was not as noticeable. Plus, I can darken the font on the HD. That two tone yellow screen is not pleasing, to me. The screen looks dull. I hope to try it outside tomorrow. I don't like the looks of the Voyage screen outside. |

You the new owner of a Kobo reader is responsible for final quality control. If you don't like screen color or something else return it to Kobo. This should train them to improve their quality control and stop wasting our and thier time and money by selling better products.

I know that, but it's too soon for me to make that decision.

Now that I've gotten just over 500 books on my Glo HD and played around with it some, the screen is more beige than I originally thought. When I have it next to my other readers, it's really noticeable then. It's almost as beige as my PW2 is, and that's the worst of them all. So it's really just the luck of the draw with screens like always, there's nothing more bluish about Glos/Glo HDs over Auras/Aura HDs.
My screen is very even, no color shifts at all, no shadows, in fact the usual darker cones at the bottom from the LEDs aren't even noticeable like they are a bit on my Glos. The light is just as bright at the highest setting as my Glo (but looks a bit dimmer only because the Glo I compared it to is really pure white, while the Glo HD is a beige tone). The Glo HD can go to a lower setting than the Glo can, and completely off just using the firmware slider or along the left side. I've got the same identical books on both the Glo and Glo HD and the page flipping speed is identical, once in awhile both readers will lag behind a second, but they're really identical for me speedwise. The text for me isn't all that different using Lexia DaMa, but it does look a bit smoother and slightly darker on the Glo HD. I only have a PW2 to compare them to, and there's no comparison there for me since the Kindles don't have any way to adjust the font weight or contrast like Kobo readers do, so even the Glo is much better than the PW2. Using Caecilia it was a bit more noticeable that it was a smoother font on the Glo HD. And the Glo HD does fit in any regular Glo cover, I have the snug-fitting sleep covers like this generic one and this one by Coodio. So it's nice to not have to buy another cover. The only thing I'm not too crazy about is the shiny beveled trim next to the screen to cover the slight gap for the IR beams, I keep trying to tilt the reader to get rid of the sheen. But I think I'll get used to that enough to just block it out after awhile. But the smooth feel is the best thing to me ![]() Last edited by Ripplinger; 05-02-2015 at 09:05 PM. |

What about Palatino? That has finer features. It is available on both Kobo and Kindle, right? Does that show the difference more clearly? Can you photograph it? |

The Glo HD is a great improvement to the original Glo. The background of mine, while two toned, is a soft cream color with a slightly textured look, like a piece of parchment. Last edited by booklover6; 05-02-2015 at 09:18 PM. |

My Glo HD arrived in the mail today as well. I do not have a two toned screen (yellow on the top/ blue on the bottom). It bugged the hell out of me on the Voyage so I am particularly sensitive to this problem. Granted, not all screens are created equal but mine is very uniform and consistent in the lighting. Slightly more of yellow tone overall then my PW2.
Honestly, I think the screen is really really nice. I originally returned my Voyage but have no desire to return this device. The background is naturally light and creamy, creating great contrast with the text in natural lighting. The text is as sharp as I remember on the voyage but is definitely bolder. The Voyage's e ink seemed buried under a thick pane of glass while this text seems to pop a bit more and sit closer to the surface like my first Kindle Basic ereader. I am still getting used to the quirks of Kobo software but my initial impressions are very positive. Love the font options. I have tested the full screen option that removes the header and page numbers by editing the config and that works as well. Definitely a good reader at the price it is offered at. |
