Kobo Glo HD

Ahem...impressions from the five people that have said they have it in hand, please? How is the screen?

The screen is a beaut. Perhaps just a tad more bluish than my h20, but the difference is very slight, and can be just the luck of the bin draw. I can make out no difference in text rendering quality, (at least, not without shrinking the text to very very small print, which the Glo HD does admirably, but I don't think is all that practical.) It's deffinately better than the paperwhite 2nd Gen. Since I'm Canadian, I can't compare to Voyage, and I now doubt I'll bother.

The real surprise is the responsiveness of the touch screen. Do we have confirmation that this is actually IR and not capacitive? The raised bezel could just be a practical consideration, as a safe border to hold the device.

Sadly, the sleepcover is another disaster. At least this one will hold itself closed so provides good protection. However, holding the kobo left handed causes the flap to detach from the back and pop out annoyingly. It doesn't interfere with reading, so 'disaster' might be a strong word for something that just annoys me on principle. However, after my complete disappointment with the past several sleepcovers from Kobo, I think it's time I just bit the bullet and import some gecko covers. Trying and discarding Kobo covers is getting expensive.

The screen on the Glo HD combined with the Kobo font redering are both miles better than the Paperwhite, but the covers are one thing Amazon really gets right.


Edit: Speaking of the Sleepcover, the box says it's for either the Glow HD or the Kobo Touch 2.0 I suspect that bodes ill for people who were hoping the missing 2nd model was a new mini.

I think this is interesting. Are we reaching a point of diminishing returns for DPI? I have a Sony PRS-T3 (6" Pearl screen) which is 215 DPI. Slab serif fonts designed for screens like Amasis render pretty accurately down to 6pt.



But classic serif fonts with more contrast, like Palatino, don't render quite as accurately at 6pt.



What does Palatino look like at 6pt (2 mm) on the Kobo Glo HD?

So any chance someone has popped theirs open to see if the storage is an SD card? Seriously thinking of picking up the HD Glo since my Kobo Glo died when I tripped on the way home from work and broke the screen last summer, very much miss it as my tablet doesn't come close to being as good.

Does anyone know if a molded type of case for the original Glo will fit or would it have to be more of a holster style case?

You could use a holster style case but since the HD is very close in dimensions to the Glo most cases should work. I have a holster case for the Glo and it fits OK but you'd probably want to cut out a bit of the top material to expose the power button, now center. The problem I found with the cover that I have is that Glo HD switch is much more sensitive to the magnet than the Glo. This caused the HD to sleep at times while reading. It was very annoying. I'm using a sleeve until I can get a sleep cover off of ebay. This may also be a problem with molded sleep covers for the Glo.

The screen is sharp very close to print. The leds are noticeable along the bottom of the HD as slightly hotter spots than the rest of the diffused light of the screen. Not terrible but noticeable.

There was a message from NatetheGreat where he indicated that he had dropped an HD Glo resulting in it's case opening, and yes... there was an internal SD card.

One review where they mentioned opening the Glo HD and then failed at copying the system to a larger uSD card. My suspicion is that they attempted to copy and not clone the card. Another where Nate The Great dropped a review unit and the cover popped off revealing an internal uSD card.

Or are they safely partitioned away?

I'm using this Glo case with my Glo HD. I have had the case for about a year and it is in good condition. The Glo HD fits perfectly.
