Calibre freezes + other odd behaviour (Kindle 2010)

Hi all,

Downloaded the Calibre to help sort out my library, great software. I'm quite computer literate having studied some CompSci in Uni and working in Tech Supp but this is beyond me.

The first time I downloaded I just followed the instructions as usual, thinking no problems would come up. I added all my books from my external hard drive and they copied over fine into the Calibre folder. Then the software started acting up. It took me ages to open Calibre; it took me ages to edit meta-data; and most other functions it would just freeze and I'd have to restart and no changes would be saved.

It's not my external hard drive as it works fine with other programs running files from it - and in any case I tried copying over some files from my desktop into the software and the same freezing problem occured.

So I deleted and did a clean reinstall and disabled my AntiVirus and ran in Administrator mode.

This time the software ran smoothly. I was able to add books quickly, edit metadata, etc. I thought everything was fixed. Then I tried deleting those books (just as a test). Suddenly, the freezing problem again. I thought perhaps it doesn't like deleting things so I closed and re-opened the program - this time it reverted to previous behavior of just freezing and generally being totally unusable. It also created some odd deleted folders in my external hard drive with odd file names like "Deleted Wilbur Smith jubjbsdr"

I have never had software behave so... erratically I guess is the word. I don't even know what to trouble shoot. Can anyone help or give me a guess or something to try?

Cheers.

is the External drive a USB/eSATA (cable attached) drive ?

Network drives are iffy at best and are not supported officially.

1st post suggests he's moved books from external drive into calibre library - but he's not told us where that is located yet- nor anything else relevant
I added all my books from my external hard drive and they copied over fine into the Calibre folder. Then the software started acting up.

USB. I did suspect that the problem might be that I am asking the software to go through my external drive which might cause problems, so I copied over some of my kindle files onto my C drive but the same problems occurred.

Cybmole I'd appreciate if you stopped commenting in this thread, you've been nothing but snarky which I find odd and out of place. If you need information that I've left out, ask me without the added commentary. I have a medical problem which leaves me often times confused/unable to relay information reliably. I have been on a lot of message boards and I've never had problems before. If you find it beneath you to help without being condescending thank you but I shall look elsewhere then for e-book software or rely on the good will of others here to help sort this problem out. Thank you.

Do give us a break here. We handle many queries with totally insufficient input and users that have not even read the FAQ/Help section.
I have had threads go 30+ messages before the KEY tidbits surfaced (and some that never replied with the requested system configuration information.

Your external drive should NOT be the issue. I ran Calibre portable on a old Laptop drive in a USB caddy, for over a year. (I recommend external powered if a HD )

The FAQ has the common culprits listed (and some work-arounds).
Do you have a WACOM Graphics Tablet connected?

Yes, please do read the FAQ link I posted. It is the end result of many debugging sessions and help threads, and if anything is likely to help you that is it.
I posted it for a reason.

@TeDeumLaudamus - firstly welcome to Mobileread

At a guess it appears something is awry with the file i/o. That "Deleted Wilbur Smith jubjbsdr" folder is probably a remnant of deleting an Author Folder, they're normally cleaned up toot sweet. The fact it wasn't leads me to ask - are you doing anything out of the ordinary with respect to the file system - e.g. not using NTFS, disabled the Recycle Bin etc ???.

Which version (latest is 2.26) and flavour (32bit or 64bit) of calibre are you using and is it installed into the 'normal' location.

Maybe you could you start calibre, hit 'Ctrl/Shift/R' (this will restart calibre in 'debug mode'), click through the message and quit calibre - that should pop a text editor window which you could you could cut/paste here. It'll look something like this

Spoiler:
Code:
calibre Debug log
calibre 2.26 [64bit] isfrozen: True is64bit: True
Windows-7-6.1.7601-SP1 Windows ('64bit', 'WindowsPE')
('Windows', '7', '6.1.7601')
Python 2.7.9
Windows: ('7', '6.1.7601', 'SP1', 'Multiprocessor Free')

@otherguys - give the OP a break, he's a new user of calibre, and this is his first post in the MR Calibre forum

The OP said Win7 32-bit, latest calibre from website, so I would guess s/he made sure of the current website version and is running calibre 2.26. (@TeDeumLaudamus, explicitly naming the version would be nice though. )
Either way, you can't run 64-bit calibre on a 32-bit OS.
